I gave up trying to understand the capacity.

I think Mazda just measure the voids around each rotor, and that comes to 1300cc. But each void fires once per revolution, not every other, which means it is sort of double the capacity, and the equivalent of a 2.6 litre, not a particularly powerful one as you'd expect at least 100BHP per litre from anything nowadays.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

how many do that without turbocharging? its not a bad engine at all for power output, just needs a turbo for big power. the mpg lets it down.

So exactly what car is this with a LSD?

I thought that the various forms of Traction Control had replaced LSDs these days.
It's an RX8, with a proper LSD. And no, manufacturers haven't replaced it. They try with clever braking per wheel, but if you goto a track and would actually be making use of an LSD, you'll melt your rear brakes.
When it crashes, I think turning the ignition off and on will reset the DSC, and the insurance assessor/Police will never know.
It might be stored in the ECU.
Yes, i think thats a message promoted by RX-8 owners to make their cars appear less "puny".
Ahem. Literally a capacity of a 1.3 engine, with sort of 2 ignitions per cycle compared to a piston engine, which is where the 2.6 comes from - the power, and fuel consumption of 2.6l, size and weight of a 1.3, or less, piston engine. And yes, they weren't able to trick the tax man!

The only time a LSD should make any noise is when there's no oil or the wrong oil in or it needs some anti-slip compound adding.

You might hear the tyres skidding on very tight corners such as when you are doing a full lock U turn.

The only LSD Dark Matter is concerned about is acid.

I wonder about having an LSD fitted to a normal road car. I've heard they're a PITA.
Where would you actually drive a car hard enough on the road to warrant it?

I dont think they're a PITA or see how they would be?

Yes, if you drive enthusiastically you'd get the use out of it. My MINI would attempt to lift / spin the inside wheel coming out of corners and brakes traction a fair bit over undulating / uneven roads, so it would certainly benefit from it. Cant forsee me pulling the car apart to retrofit one though.

They're an optional extra on a new Fiesta ST too.

Powerful RWD cars would benefit from one too - again mostly coming out of corners where weight if over one particular rear wheel and you're at risk of lifting the other.

I was told a long time back, by people who had cars fitted with them, that they wore tyres unevenly and had problems with reliability.
Never had a car fitted with one though.

Whether anyone should be driving a car hard enough to need one on the road is a moot point though.

Most of the Olden Days Jags worth having had LSDs Power-Lock if I remember right, the later XJS used a Dana unit that broke even easier. I had a V12 with one, made it quite lively with the cheap Jaguar rear suspension, my father had a 3.8 MK2 with one, they were quite fragile the V12 broke, and the MK2 seized up (but that was because they rust really badly, and the rear axle moved back and punctured the diff cover)

I had a Ford Maverick with LSD rear axle too.

They basically let you spin both rear wheels rather than just one, then the back of the car tries to overtake the front. You needed to know how to drive, rather than treat the pedals as binary switches like we do with modern cars.

You don't really notice them in normal driving, except when turning slowly, they get a bit snatchy when the oil wears
