Yeah - that was the debate. "Need" versus "Runs better on". Maybe a Japan-spec grey import designed/configured for readily available 100 would not be able to adjust down to 95 - but a UK spec should do. It should be feasible to design an engine that can make use of 99/100 if available and an ECU that can adjust down to 97 and to 95.I need to think of something new here...0

Whether the ECU is sophisticated enough to adjust both for "lower than expected" and "higher than expected" fuel - I don't know.
That's what I'm exhaustively trying to explain. Many cars have an ECU that will adjust to better quality fuel. The RX8 does not. It's hard coded to, off the top of my head, 102RON in Japan, 95RON in UK and 91 in US. It has different power ratings in each region as a result.I know of Audis that 'request' super unleaded, but will run on 95 just fine, and my Nissan 350Z 'very much wants' super, and running on 95 is to get you to the next petrol station, and don't rev it above 4,000 RPM. You can't generalise, you need to read your own car's manual.
It costs 2p more in Sainsburys for a litre of 97RON vs 95. You've already spent money on a performance car, why not use that performance?!Maybe a Japan-spec grey import designed/configured for readily available 100 would not be able to adjust down to 95 - but a UK spec should do.
Again, you're talking generally when I've been specifically describing the RX8. If you imported one of those, you would damage it if you try to run it in the UK without adjustment.Yes it does.
Er, can you give any evidence of this? All I've got to support my argument is a year of ownership, and reading umtpeen threads in UK forums on the subject. I believe on the balance of reading these that it does not. I repeat, I'm talking only about octane, not any additives.
Premix I'll keep out of.0
