  • Good luck with your car boot sales today Jwil :).

I hate artex on ceilings and especially on walls . We had it on the hall walls in our previous house and I was always scratching myself on it, plus it was a massive dust trap . Concrete floors are not great either, so I know it would be much nicer for you to lose the artex and cover the concrete.

Ugh slatted plywood. I'm starting to think you only bought this house only because it was the only one big enough for your hoard. What are the nice features of your home?

I appreciate what he's saying about the kids room but I think the kitchen sounds like less money for a bigger improvement overall for the whole family. I still think the mattress should come first though. Get your quotes and go from there. You can't really guess the costs and then you can work out which bits have the best outcome.

Mentally exposed concrete and artex and clutter weigh on me and make me feel out of control. I think you do so so well to cope with it all. Especially in the colder months when you're stuck in with it trying to navigate around it. You do so well jwil.

I was going to suggest a car boot for you. That's brilliant. I'm getting rid of a broken malm from Ikea today :) that's my irritating bulk gone for today. I think people will be buzzing to get out tomorrow and will buy all your stuff. Xxxx

It's a family home, we inherited half of it and bought another relative out. We'd never be able to afford anything like this otherwise. We knew the issues, and knew we wouldn't be able to do anything immediately but it's got a lot of potential. Also most of the hoard was already stored here along with the relative's hoard which we spent the first few years clearing
We're not getting a mattress now, we've got used to the one we put on there. It took a while but we are both fine with it now.

I would like to see the kitchen done, but the kids room is also important as it's only got one plug socket and the window is desperately needed. It's got no carpet down and we don't want to put that down until the other work is done. It's amazing how noisy they are playing on floorboards, they ALWAYS avoid the rugs!

One thing about having all the clutter was that it hid the work needing doing. The clearer it gets the more we want to start doing :o
I wish I could shift my irritating bulk but it’s my belly

    Haha me too :D

It's awful :( I don't know why people liked it! It's not in any other room, so why on earth the kitchen???? I think just covering that up and painting and some new flooring will make a huge difference until we can do the kitchen properly, which realistically is a long time away yet!

  • I think people liked artex because it's indestructible, but it does look AWFUL .

Well we've abandoned DH at the car boot sale to come home for lunch.

We're really pleased with what we achieved, and hopefully DH will clear some more before he comes home :T :T All the bulky stuff bar 2 items was gone :T :T I did suggest he dropped one of the items that was left at the tip for reuse on the way home, but I don't think he will as he'd prefer to give it to charity. The other item we know will sell, it's just a bit of time.

Sold a few books, but still a lot there. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get rid of them I think. It's a lot of weight and bulk. I might try and sell some to one of the online buyers, or maybe just give up and send them all to charity. We weeded through them last year so it's only ones I consider 'decent' to be left. Some I kept as I think I might like to read them again before sending them to charity, but in reality the likelihood of me doing it is slim as I don't want to bring them back in the house.

I know, and every single bit of dirt and dust clings to it

  • Artex and wood panelling were decorative fashion statements in the 70s. It was also a good way to cover up bad plaster. People actually pad extra to have swirls (my father-in-law did).

Well done at the car boot jwil. As a cheap fix have you tried painting the kitchen floor? Might make it look cleaner/brighter.

I've spent the morning trying to clear the garage. My brother-in-law suggested I did a car boot to sell all the tools I'll never use. Mr Retired had so much stuff. As hard as it is I'm aiming to start clearing the non sentimental stuff. Whether I stay here or move I do need to do it while I'm fit and able.
  • Well done on selling so much stuff at the car boot :T. The sunshine must have brought all the buyers out. It's a double win, gaining money and losing clutter :T.

Lovely to hear from you retired, I've been meaning to message you. How are you getting on? The non-sentimental stuff is definitely the stuff to start with. Tools have always sold really well at boot sales here.

Our artex isn't swirls, it's just like little spikes all over the walls and ceiling. I think it must have been the budget version :rotfl: I have thought about painting the kitchen floor, even just to make it look a bit fresher. But it's quite uneven and there are patches where something has been knocked down (no idea what, as it's a very small kitchen!) It will need levelling at some point, so I think covering it with something will hide it better than painting it.

Thank you, I'm really pleased. We hate selling at this car boot (although it's our favourite for buying) as they make you stay til the end regardless. But we do always do well when we sell here!
