MSE News: Energy firm Iresa ceases trading - here's what it means for customers

Okay here is an ethical question.
I have just received my final bill from IRESA. The balance is less than I expected. Analysing the final bill, it is because they have ignored the reading I submitted on 1st August, and used a made up reading about 200 units higher.
If I Accept this final bill, then it will mean I get those 200 units at the IRESA rate, and my first usage bill with Octopus will be lower.
If I dispute the bill, and make them use the correct reading, then those 200 units will correctly eventually be billed to me at the higher Octopus rate.
What would you do?
Presumably all meter reads have been agreed by the independent meter reading agency.
If you are talking electricity, 200 units does not meet the threshold that will compel suppliers to investigate any dispute by you (assuming the new supplier does use the same reading to start as the old supplier used as a final meter read)
For gas, you could dispute as that would equate to about 2200kWh (metric) or > 6000kWh (imperial)0 -
I had my final bill last night, I had provided meter residents on the 27th July so die not t provide any others as this was close enough to the 1st of August.
The electricity was fine but the added 73 units to my gas ( about £25 more than it should) I accepted this and paid it as I want to swap sooner rather than later.
The problem will be is when I swap my meter reading for gas will be less than there reading as I go through very little gas in the summer. Will s be a problem?0 -

Yes, but I'm sure they will resolve it in time.

So, the 21st is finally here...
- We've disputed the final bill due to the incorrect figures being used.
- We've just transferred to another energy provider too, its £6 a month less..but that's £72 a year.

I rang Octopus yesterday having agreed my final bill and they Octopus had taken their first DD from my Bank account on 20/08 so a fully fledged Octopus customer.
I wanted to know whether or not it was safe for me to go ahead and instigate a switch to another company.
After checking with management the person I spoke to recommended that because under industry regulations 2 switches in one month aren't permitted ( the first switch being from Iresa to Octopus) they Octopus would reject any requests received before 28/08/18.0 -

That's probably just because of the 2x 14 day minimum cooling off periods with a switch (not that the transfer from Iresa to Octopus was a normal switch with it's own cooling off period).
28/08/18 is less than 14 days away anyway, so you can safely initiate a switch now, you'll be past their arbitrary deadline before the new supplier contacts them to take over.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). Mmmmm . looking at switching/comparing now. I am on Oct's "Flex June 2018 V1 rate
but it is not on the comp site I am looking at - Citizens Advice.
Wonder which I should pick as a 'nearest'0 -

Doesn't matter which current tariffs you input - you know what you were paying Iresa -just look for the nearest ££s for your usage!
As it happens, Iresa tariffs are still listed:)0 -

Choose whichever one you like. I'm guessing that you wont actually be staying with Octopus so any 12 month comparison is a waste of time.
You aren't (or shouldn't be) interested in the so called savings but in actually what the new company will actually cost you.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
