According to MSE (and the first page of this thread) that's the rate we would get if we used our Visa card over in the States. So we would get that rate wouldn't we?
  • That seems to be the only site it is showing at that rate on.

It must be a mistake, surely?

Assuming the cheque is issued to your own name, your bank will normally be able to cash that for you. Some type of current accounts does not allow foriegn cheques to be paid in, but most high street banks generally do.
Of course, they will charge you for this anything between £25-50.

I need to exchange the other way round. I worked for EDS and had a load of shares which were compulsorily purchased by HP, so I now have US$ cheques to the value of $30k+ and no US$ account.
Does anyone have a suggestion about the best way to get these converted to GBP?
  • That site didnt actually put down the correct rate I think it must have been a mistake as the BOE rate today is only $1.53 ,most places are offering about $1.50. Anyone going start getting your currency this week it looks like there may be a move up in the market gone up 4cents already today.

Get a Fair FX debit charge card an load it with £1900 sterling..

It will give you the best Xchange rate you can get and can be used free of charge in the US for debit card purchases. You would use it at Mastercard outlets exactly the same way you use a switch.maestro card.
Change the other £100 up for ready cash at your local bank/travel agent which of course you will need some of on arrival.

Read the article at the link it goes into detail on the advantages.........

Downside is they quote 7 - 10 days delivery on the card although mine turned up 3 days after the web transaction... Still waiting for the pin number though. So if your need is really urgent you need to get your skates on......
