Con artists - "Approved Garages"

Although, there is a certain irony in someone who so clearly supports right wing ideals complaining about a garage's right to operate their business as they see fit.
Free market & all that, old boy....
Free market is fine if the price is quoted up front, but a garage is the only business where you don't know what you're going to pay until the work's done. They can write any number they like on that receipt.0 -

Whenever I have had any work carried out, the garage I use always lets me know up front how much it will cost and if they find anything else that they think needs doing, they will call me for approval before doing it.
Four pages of replies to your opening post and just about every single one disagreeing with you.
Doesn't this tell you something?0 -
Did you even read what I just wrote? If I'm a passenger in the back of a car, the driver is free to ask me to use a seatbelt so I don't kill him if he crashes. What's the law to do with this?
You're not aware that you have to belt up in the back - by law? You will be fined if you do not. Not the driver unless you are under 18.0 -
Never happens. The only parts I've had fail are old ones that have been on the car for years, usually the originals. Cheap parts work just as well as the rip off expensive ones you love to buy. The main dealers must see you coming.
But it does happen. Saying it doesn't because it's "never happened to you" would be like me saying road accidents don't happen because in 34 years I've never had one.0 -
I'd never use a garage that was happy to fit my parts unless I was supplying Genuine Parts made from Unobtanium.
I shall be painting one of my cars shortly that is close to 50 yrs old. I will probably be suppying NOS Panels. There is no chance in the world the body shop could get hold of these.0 -

I'm on a forum called "money saving expert", to save money, what's trolling about that? Who wants to pay more than they have to?0 -

If the garage supplied and fitted the part then this wouldn't be a consideration as any failure would be down to them irrespective of whether the item failed due to a manufacturing defect or installation error.
If I crash my car it's my fault unless I can prove otherwise. My insurance pays for any damages. My insurance has no problem with me fitting my own parts, why would they have a problem with a garage fitting my own parts?0 -

In the short term, it might benefit you but in the long term it hammers entire towns
No, companies that charge fairly run for decades, like the two garages I always used to use. They only closed because the owners retired. Two garages nearby that overcharge got less and less customers until they went under with in 5 or 10 years.0 -

Nothing wrong with a customs union, but when the EU impose laws on our citizens it's beyond a joke.0 -

I'll not go into detail about EU laws that have no relevance to this thread. When it comes to type approval for safety reasons, the EU has done a great deal to improve the safety of many things from car parts to electrical goods and chargers.
OP would you buy something that would set your house on fire because 'it was cheaper'? Type approval increases safety for all. Laws are in place for the benefit of most people. This will not change as and when and if Brexit happens. Safety standards will be pegged to the equivalent of the EU.0
