It's a setting in your iPhone, go into settings, keyboard and turn off 'smart punctuation'0 -
No I'm stating a fact from my own personal experience. That fact is that my iPhone 7 updated without any problems at all.
But you are now outnumbered in this thread by people who have had their mic broken by the software update. You seem to think they've done something wrong, and you're doing something right - what is it? Of course, it's still Apple's responsibility anyway. People are allowed to do what they like with their phone, short of jailbreaking, according to the terms they sign up to with Apple.0 -
OptimalOptimus wrote: »Tekneil, have you had any luck escalating? I contacted my Apple shop again and they seemed frustrated as more cases of this keep appearing......
Hi mate, not as yet. I'm currently banned off Apples forum, I've thoroughly read their terms of use and have NOT broken any of the guidelines. As soon as I'm back on there I'm gonna be detailing my next actions. Trading standards. And hoping others will get on board too.
I'm not having somebody else break my phone and not be compensated. No chance. No I'm stating a fact from my own personal experience. That fact is that my iPhone 7 updated without any problems at all. Therefore if someone else's iPhone 7 gets problems when updated there must be something different about their iPhone 7 when compared to mine.
@ OP: Have you tried updating or resetting through iTunes on a Mac or Windows computer? All that's necessary is to download and install iTunes and then connect the iPhone to the computer using the Lightning to USB lead. Ensure the computer is connected to wifi.
Come on mate...Have you even read everything here properly? I use PC's daily and build computers, I have been a coder/developer my whole life, and I'd never recommend doing things like that over WiFi lol. My place is fully networked with CAT6 cable.
That and the fact that the known symptoms I've pointed out various times now are exactly what many other people are experiencing.
When many people experience the same symptoms as mentioned above, that points to a fault. And even if that's not enough to convince you, Apple admitted this fault. I don't know how much more confirmation you need? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Would anybody here mind if I screen grab comments relevant to the issue? So I can build a folder of evidence detailing repeating symptoms/experiences? I'll be doing it on each site/media that I've posted on, and forwarding it all to Trading Standards.
I can just link to the various sites etc, but gathering ordered images can make things more easily read etc. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Nope - go for it0 -
Hi TekNeil,
Any updates on this, I am having the same issue,
Cheers0 -
Hello all,
Firstly, apologies for a quiet period. I struggle with stuff like this because of personal circumstances.
Anyway, here's where I'm up to. There are two possible routes to take here. (UK Specific sorry but may still help).
1/ If your iPhone is under 1 year old, then Apple are liable to repair or replace it at no cost. This is stated within their statutory terms here: https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/
2/ If your phone is over 1 year old, but under 6 years old, then the retailer at which the phone was acquired (Vodafone etc) is liable under the 'Consumer Rights Act 2005'. Again, this should be repair or replacement at no cost.
The issue I currently have is that the old 'Passing the buck' line was thrown at me when I visited my local Vodafone store. They said that the issue lies with Apple and not them. This is incorrect in legal terms.
So what now?
Well I called apple (Numbers here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201232) and I tried to explain in simple and concise terms that:
* I have an iPhone 7 (Yours may be 7Plus) and that I was suffering the known issue of loss of microphone and speaker after updating the software to 11.4.1 (11.3.x is affected too).
* Phone instantly lost it's MIC and speaker during phone calls.
* The speaker icon is greyed out during an attempted phone call.
* SIRI no longer works, because obviously the MIC can no longer hear.
* Voice memos no longer work as the record button can't be pressed (Again, MIC isn't working).
* The bottom speaker used for music playback works fine. The speaker which does not work anymore is the one for communication at the top of the phone.
* Either doing a hard reset (Holding power button + Vol down button), OR simply turning the phone off/back on will result in it taking an abnormally long time to come back on.
* Doing resets, restores to either a backup or to a fresh install (As new) does not resolve the above symptoms.
I have now received a case number, and was told that the Apple store would do diagnostics to confirm this known fault. We already knew this was the case right? So I emphasised this point, and that I wanted to put across that as Vodafone were unwilling to help then I'd hope that Apple would do the right thing.
I would suggest others call Apple and do the same. Explain the listed points in order, basically that you suffer with this 'known' issue, and the symptoms are as listed.
Technically it should be Vodafone (In my case as my phone is 2 years old) that should be compensating me, and they are then compensated by Apple. As Vodafone are being unhelpful, I'm going to get the phone diagnosed at an apple store (Nearest one is bloody miles away).
If they compensate me, all good. If not and they want any form of payment then I'm going to ask that they contact my local Vodafone store with my case details and suggest that they put this right.
If they are not willing to do that, then it will be Vodafone that I have to contact trading standards about.

I'm sorry that's all I have to offer for now, it's been really stressful to just lose the functionality of my phone, as I'm sure it has for you guys too. I'm not very good at this sort of stuff. But if we keep the pressure on Apple I hope we can get this fixed. Here are more links to simply 'add weight' to the issue. Please do cross post on and share these links which ALL confirm that the issue does exist...

I!!!8217;ve not read all the thread because it!!!8217;s long winded and I!!!8217;m lazy.
Have you actually taken it to an Apple store for a Genius Bar appointment?
The jobsworths on live chat and phone are just that. I had an issue with my iPhone 8 when I got it. Live chat and phone were useless. Working from a script. Made an appointment at the Genius Bar and they sorted it there and then.
So if you!!!8217;ve not actually made an appointment and and been to an Apple store I suggest you give it a go. Take the proof with you and stand your ground.Sigless0
