I wouldn!!!8217;t usually advocate installing beta software as there are normally quirks/bugs that have yet to be ironed out but am wondering if it might have been worth trying iOS 12?

Depends how confident you feel but am trying it on my iPad and iPhone SE and it!!!8217;s leaps and bounds ahead of iOS 11!

Be interesting to see if this fixed the problem. It's hard to believe software could physically break the microphone unless it sent too much voltage/current through it.

I've added the below to the list of symptoms.
    * Either doing a hard reset (Holding power button + Vol down button), OR simply turning the phone off/back on will result in it taking an abnormally long time to come back on.

    Can others confirm this?

    List now looks like this:

    * My phone was perfectly fine.
    * I updated to 11.4.1.
    * My phone instantly lost it's MIC and speaker during phone calls.
    * The speaker icon is greyed out during an attempted phone call.
    * SIRI no longer works, because obviously the MIC can no longer hear me.
    * Voice memos no longer work as the record button can't be pressed (Again, MIC isn't working).
    * Either doing a hard reset (Holding power button + Vol down button), OR simply turning the phone off/back on will result in it taking an abnormally long time to come back on.

Or.... The phone has been dropped on its face causing this issue.

Nope. No 'or' about it, not in my case at least, and seemingly others.

But you are still left with the inescapable fact that my iPhone 7 updated without any problems at all but when you updated your iPhone 7 you got problems So therefore there must be something different about your iPhone 7 when compared to mine.

Yes, peoples iPhone 7/Plus are different, that's obvious as I already explained earlier.

Of course, that's the beauty of software, it gives us options for our devices. As an ex web developer I know a little about this sort of stuff. For example the software allows for many 'If/and/or/else' statements for the options in the OS interface/GUI.
It could literally be one setting/option (Piece of code) that differentiates those having the issue with those who are not. Or...it could be setting x, y, z, exponential combined which dictates who has the issue.

Just one single setting can change how the OS update runs/installs/what it changes.

Is my iPhone 7 set up exactly the same as yours?
Does it have the same storage capacity?
The same components inside regards manufacture date?
The same base OS from new?
    The very same applications?
The very same amount/type of cached data?
The same OS settings/options in the GUI?
    etc etc...

The answer to all of this (And more) is 'No', maybe the capacity is the same but...

So when a (Very basic example) OS update does its thing and runs ONE statement like:
    "Is bluetooth enabled?
    If yes do 'x'
    if no do 'y'
If yes AND 'z' is enabled do 'xyz'
If no AND 'z' is enabled do 'xyz'
If yes AND 'z' is not enabled do 'xyz'
If no AND 'z' is not enabled do 'xyz'

OS install/update code can get massively complex.

Again, my phone was fine. I updated, went to bed. And the first time I used the new OS in the morning it was knackered. Same symptoms as many others. It doesn't take a genius to suggest a software issue, or at the very least a software/hardware 'compatibility' issue.

PS: Apple are now restricting my access to their forum. They're just giving me more fuel to take this further.

  • I have the same issue and no support from Apple (other than to pay £320 to replace). The facts are I had a fully functioning microphone/Speaker before the update, with no issue. The update has caused the issue to come to the fore, rendering the phone unusable.

What is the stance on claiming through consumers rights law ( as the hardware component hasn't lasted 2 years) through no fault of my own. I purchased through carphone warehouse.

I'm probably going to go to trading standards, and also try to speak with Martin Lewis (MoneySavingExpert) who would probably air this on TV.

PS: I've been banned from Apples forum for absolutely no reason. Please keep posting, sharing, tweeting etc about the issue. Apple admitted that their software update was damaging peoples phones, and then cherry picked random customers to compensate. That will not sit well with trading standards.
