Travel Insurance for Post-Brexit holiday

  • For the past couple of years, my wife and I have had yearly travel insurance from a UK provider. We are both retired and Irish citizen residing in the Republic of Ireland.
Time has come to renew the policy and had a chat with the provider explaining my concerns about "post soft/hard Brexit" on any legal ramification, claims handling, medicals..etc and I found the answer quite vague. Our concerns are not only air travel but mainly the medical side...
The Irish Central Bank website has clear recommendations on readiness for an eventual hard Brexit, see their consumer Hub/FaQ.
When I asked the UK insurance provider to confirm in writing their guarantee that NO change in the policy/warranty would occur, the best they could do was to email me a transcript of the online chat!
Some well known UK based companies have indeed already taken steps by registering an "Irish" branch to maintain a foot in EU.
Maybe it is time to look around on the Irish market for an Irish registered insurance provider!
The Brexit situation today is still uncertain and all indications seem to point towards a hard Brexit!
    Cheers

Everyone anticipating or intending to book a holiday in an EU country, should take a look at this:
    https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-may-require-visas-for-british-travelers-post-brexit/

There is every chance that UK travelers will need to apply for visas to visit an EU country. Or there is every chance that a visit of up to 90 days, will not need a visa. There are also several other alternatives including possible air travel problems, but it all boils down to the normal state of events right through this whole atrociously-handled Brexit mess.

Neither our own government, nor the EU Parliament, has given serious, responsible thought to providing clear guidance for the public of the UK or the EU, regarding many of the issues. We are stumbling around in the dark as usual and the biggest blocks to reliable information, are our representatives in Westminster. At a time when they should be united in efforts to find solutions and provide information, they are engaged in divisive argument, debating the merits of their own, often impractical solutions.

This is the biggest event in this country, and potentially the greatest national emergency, since WWII. And our MP's can do nothing but argue their own corners. What a mess.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I have just renewed my passport because I suspected that, if we got a no deal, my old passport would not be accepted after this March (even though the expiry date wasn't until March 2020). I have just tested this using your link and I was correct. I wouldn't have been able to use it for a trip to Austria this June.
Fortunately I now have a new one valid until Jan 2029 (or 6 months before).
I am concerned about what will happen re. visas and insurance. I haven't yet booked any trips abroad this year.
