Tablet lifespan?

Really more of a thread for those who've had more than 1 tablet, especially if they've owned both iPad and an Android device.

Years ago my wife got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1". It was great at first but (i forget the exact timeframe....) no later than 24 months old it started to become incredibly laggy. Battery became very very poor & it just started to die. I'm sure it showed signs before 2 years were up. For what they cost i thought this was pretty poor.

Then she got the iPad Air 2 at Xmas 2014 and it's been great since. In recent months the battery wasn't lasting quite so long but other than that it's been fine, apart from at the weekend it started to become incredibly laggy. You'd try scrolling and then after some wait it'd finally scroll but at a really fast speed as it's still reacting to what you did a few seconds ago. You'll select things in Safari or Chrome or whatever and you have to press a good number of times for it to register.
We updated from iOS9 to iOS11 to see if it'd fix it and it seemed to for about 24 hours but now it's gone back to playing up again.

So it's lasted nearly double the time the android did but still, you'd like to think that what these things cost they should last longer.

My wife is also considering those Chromebook things as an alternative at the moment.

Just wondering from your own personal experience - how long have your tablets lasted? (to cut the funnies i'm obviously not talking about paracetamol etc :))
Are those Chromebook things any good?

My wife only really uses her tablet for browsing, or at least that's 90-95% of what she uses it for. She doesn't want a huge laptop so was looking at those kind of things.

I've had a HP Chromebook 11 for over 4 years and its still as good as new, even the battery. Also have an Amazon Fire tablet, 2 years old and as good as when new. Might be just the luck of the draw, I don'y know.

My iPad is getting very laggy now, around 5 years old and its no longer being updated by Apple

But what can you do, technology marches on

Its fine for browsing still and its my favourite cookbook so it will do me a while longer

I was thinking about buying a new one but to future proof it for a decent time I think Id have to spend more then Im willing and buying something way too powerful for my needs
  • I!!!8217;ve had an Acer Chromebook for 5 years which has been used by the kids and dropped etc. The keyboard is smashed so I connected a very cheap usb keyboard and it works a treat. It!!!8217;s never laggy as chrome is constantly updated and I e not noticed any drop in battery performance.
This is great for watching YouTube iPlayer Netflix and google play.
I would get another one when/if this dies. We!!!8217;ve seen laptops and tablets come and go but the Chromebook lives through them all.

Android device lasted a year before the charging port broke. iPad Air 2 (will only buy iPads from now on)will be four years in November and as good as the day I got it. My father had an issue with his iPad and took it to the Apple Store where they said they would replace the battery, he swears blind it was a newer iPad that was returned to him.

what was the cost of each device? you can't make a judgement on one android device as there are thousands of different android devices varying massively in quality starting from <£20. i have had my lenova android tablet (£110) for the last 4 years and not had any problems

you are not comparing apples with apples

^^^ this..... when you consider 3 android tablets over 5-6 years will cost around 25% of an ipad, it's certainly easier to swallow when you need one with a newer version of the OS for the stuff you want to work :)

I!!!8217;m not sticking up for Apple (especially after they hid the fact they slowed down devices with batteries that were aging) but apparently iOS 12 is going to improve things like keyboard speeds etc on devices as far back as iPhone 5S.

I've just picked one up for £30, with mini-HDMI output on it (for streaming to the tv), and it's grand and will probably do what I want it to do for a couple or more years, so yes, it can be done, just avoid over-priced brand-names ;)

...and the cost of android tabs has come down a lot in the last couple of years, so even easier to do now :)
