I don't feed birds bread as it doesn't contain protein or fat that the birds need. A diet heavy in bread can be as bad as starvation in my eyes but that is just my preference.

Puddings mean adding sugar to to the diet plus sourdough, in my opinion, isn't as tasty in puddings as a standard bread. I eat sourdough because its easier on the gut.

Freezing the ends of a family of 4 isn't an option because we only have a three drawer freezer meaning freezer space is small.

There was an issue within the family which is why I changed over to hm flat breads. Much more economical, I know what is in them, can store ingredients to make tham and suitable for my own dietary needs.

    Thanks for the input. :)
  • Sadly store cupboard critters are interested in ALL dry goods no matter what they're made from.

Flatbreads like chapattis can be made with just flour and water and I can't taste any difference in leaving out the yoghurt/oil when I make them. The texture is very slightly 'tighter' without the extra ingredient but they are still perfectly nice to eat.

I hadn't ever thought of making chapattis with only flour and water. Thank you for this information Mrs L.

Of course, and suffice it to say that they don't just get bread, but they have access to nuts, seeds, fat balls, carrion, all sorts. They also like cat kibble

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Hello all! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and a fantastic New Year!

We had a great time. Was very busy (hence not being online) and were largely illness free! Though DH has come down with a stomach bug overnight. Sigh.

The car battery died on Xmas Eve morning! Arghh!! DH was trying to diagnose the problem right when a thunderstorm showed up! Ha! Typical! But a kind colleague picked me up, my step-FIL helped DH source a new battery and replace, and my brother gifted us most of the cost. Completely out of the blue. Such a lovely gesture, and unexpected, but very welcome! So, crisis averted, I went into work until just after noon and then went to the shop to get my final bits. Was nowhere near as busy as I expected.

Completely overbought on the food. Even with the folks visiting, it has been hard to make a dent. I cooked up some of the party food, and took that and the excess crisps and biscuits etc to the neighbours on 29th for a little get together with the kids. That helped. Still have PLENTY of food in stock.

Popped to Morries with my Dad on 27th, and their reduced bakery items were overflowing!! Got a couple packs of 4 bread rolls at 5p each! They had full on cakes reduced to £2 a pop as well. I had to resist. Where would it all go, after all? Did stock up on some of posher bread though, and shoved in the freezer. Doubt I'll need to buy anymore this month.

Have mostly avoided bargain hunting. Saving pennies. Did get a new swimming costume though. A zoggs one in the leisure centre reduced to £12.50. I think it was marked up wrong, but wahoo for me. And bought a new blender. The one we had was a smoothie one and that was about all it could cope with, sadly. So new one acquired in Asda for £25, and old one sold for £5.

Back onto healthy eating. Need to get my weight under control, and be healthier.

Cupboards, freezers and fridge all still full! lol

  • We made a visit to Ikea this afternoon and I remembered to pick up a couple of their 100 packs of tea lights which are a useful store cupboard item.

Yes, they are fab! We still have a half full pack that we bought over 7 years ago when we were living in Holland.

    Hope everyone is keeping well.

DFV, I read your news on another thread. I am so sorry for your loss xx

    Thank you, euronorris.

For anyone on the general prepping thread this is indeed a repeat.
just to really elevate the tone, spirits etc - if you have neither a Will nor a notelet for your presumed survivors indicating a preference as to how you wish to be disposed of, it is wholly possible you deserve to be cast out into some placeless stateless restless limbo in eternity.

As my lad left nothing on paper, his distraught father’s memory is possibly skewed by hope & I have spent an educational hour with a funeral director that will probably be Very Expensive.

Seriously, even a postcard of ”I do not want a grave/tombstone/religious service/humanist service/wake or Any other acknowledgement of my death other than to p!ss off my creditors” would make life significantly simpler.

Delete as applicable & add in what you Do want, eh? Date it, so the most up to date card is known.

Speaking as one wrestling with an unexpected death so coroner, no will so intestate & very little certainty I am doing the right thing. Which adds salt to the grief.

And I do hope we’ve all stocked up on pasta (etc) in anticipation of price rises.

Oh yes, & if you are male & do not give blood, please review that? There’s only so much us women can do (the hormones, the terrible terrible hormones), so please go spare them an armful?

    Here Endeth the rant!

    DforV,
Although trying to make arrangements with the funeral director was incredibly difficult, take solace in the fact that your son loved his family so much that he trusted you completely to do whatever you thought best for him.

I second this DforV, you are very much in my thoughts. Having lost a son myself 35 years ago I know the pain and feelings of unreality you must be feeling. Look after yourself!
