I managed to coax a thoroughly-bad-tempered-with-a-cold son into momentary smiling with an unexpected tub of salted caramel ice-cream. It all depends on quite how you define disaster I think? But also how long said Mivvis survive the hurly burly of modern life. As the effective antidepressant that turns out to be an empty box is Very Bad News...
I'm trying to get the chaps to eat the veg I loaded the freezer with before Christmas so I have space for the New Years bargains & the haggis I intend to load up on. Then I can eye this What will we not get after Brexit more carefully.0 -
Given the increasing amount of NHS gubbins I have to take, I've now got an extra tab on my special spreadsheet listing my stocks of meds (for repeats more than anything else). For anything that needs to be taken on an ad hoc basis (like paracetamol) I put a big marker pen X on the box that is currently open
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
There are no real sales yet around here except we went to Aldi yesterday and they had 'serves 8' size Christmas puddings reduced to £1.99 (I got two) with a use by date of April 2021 and Christmas cakes down to £2.99 use by the end of January (I got one) so we thought that would do for a small celebration should Brexit ever be concluded and let us get on with normal life again and get used to the changes it brings. Garden centre this morning hadn't started their sale except in the food area and I got a nice tin of Danish butter cookies for £2.50. I shall go out foraging tomorrow and see what's on offer in the larger supermarkets.0

Yes, Tesco wanted full price for Christmas cakes still! Bah.0

I'm going to invest in some tins of corned beef, tuna, stewed steak, ham and some jars of German bockwurst in brine as the basis of meals should meat become an expensive item that is a once in a while treat on the thought that many vegetables and fruits are grown here in the UK and should be available in quantity enough throughout the year to be affordable or home grown which would be even better. If meat does become very expensive I think I'd opt for bacon in some form or other as the flavour is 'big' enough for a smaller amount to be enough to flavour a soup or stew. I currently can buy 1kg of bacon pieces for under £2 both smoked and green and the supermarkets are still occasionally selling packs of 'cooking bacon' for reasonable prices so some of those will be going into the freezer for future use as I know I'll use them up in everyday dishes we normally have anyway.0

Depends where the meat (or any produce) comes from. I vaguely remember an item on Countryfile, maybe last Autumn, where sheep farmers (maybe pork, maybe beef too) were up in arms about losing their export markets. Depressed export market should be good for consumers in the domestic market, but not necessarily the farmers

I wonder if people would keep 'meat chickens' or rabbits in back gardens or even if we might see 'pig clubs' like in the last war if meat does become a real luxury item. Sadly as you say farmers will suffer as the EU subsidies and the eastern European folk who come over to harvest and process the field crops aren't available any longer. I've just been having a pootle around the internet and found some recipes to make burgers and a 'meatloaf' using baked beans which sound tasty and we grow climbing beans on the allotment and tomatoes in the greenhouse and always leave any big old pods to dry on the vines to harvest as dried beans for the winter so I can make my own if I have to.0

Forgive my ignorance, or confusion. But when / if Boris Johnson's withdrawal agreement bill goes through (which is very likely), aren't we then in a transition period? Doesn't that mean things will be pretty much the same until the end of that period in about a year's time?
Have I got that wrong?I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Transition itself might be uncertain and people will be worried about what happens at the end of that year and perhaps hold off spending just in case which may mean businesses failing if their customer base falls dramatically. No one can give an accurate prediction of what will really happen and how things will change but I bet there will be a whole lot of anxiety during that transition period.0
