A propos of woven objects, I bought a 2 x 1 metre approx piece of hand-loomed wool, I assume tweed, very thick like a rug almost. I haven't decided how it will be used yet, but it has a strange odour and on investigation I find that Harris weavers until recently had the tradition of soaking the yarn in urine to stop the wool snagging on the loom. Vats of urine were kept outside weavers' houses for the purpose, and the gentry were much enamoured with the distinctive smell of the finished object (although they had no idea of the urine connection!). I am debating on whether to wash my new find when the weather improves.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

The smell must be intriguing and probably rivals kiln smoked kippers which I gather is another "traditional" Scottish smell. A few drops of lavender oil on it may improve its odour if you find it unpalatable. Just be thankful you don't have an unneutered Tom cat in the household or he would probably be constantly raising his tail and p**ing on it to try and neuter any rival presence in the house!0 -
I shall be going through ALL my equipment and stores just after Christmas to see where there are gaps or missing things of usefulness and try to get whatever I need in the sales. If Brexit is finally likely to happen at the end of January then I hope we will be in a reasonably good position to weather any adjustment period until we're used to the changes that are bound to happen.0

Hmmm - I was planning to "coast" through January on leftovers & stores, but it would probably be sensible not to run the stores down too far, particularly the things that might have a few hiccups in the supply chain or zoom up in price.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

I was planning on coasting too to some extent, but my next MRI is going to be an important one (but aren't they all), so that will likely dictate the direction I need to prep. Mrs Un is also interested in getting back to basics, vegan wise, rather than the ready meal trap she's fallen into. End of Jan, maybe a little extra stock up on cheeses with a view to saving a few bob, maybe not, it's all very boring now. Maybe that was the point all along...
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Hi guys
We aim to get back on the healthy eating on the Monday after Xmas so I aim to stick up the freezer with meat, fish and frozen veg first. Then I’ll start on topping up my cans and packets. We only moved back in after our renovations which took longer than expected a couple of weeks ago so I needed to get on the the Xmas preps before I could go back to proper prepping. Unfortunately it also cost more than expected so my preps will have to be slow and steady a couple of extra bits a week until we’ve paid off the extra we spent.
I’m hoping nothing drastic is going to happen at the end of January but I rule nothing these days.
We also had a shock earlier this week where my firm went into administration and was almost instantly taken over by another firm. But it frightened me as I had used credit for quite a bit of Xmas this year. I was one of the lucky ones whose shops are being kept open but some of our colleagues are being made redundant. It shows that prepping is necessary just in case.
Anyway it’s nearly Xmas so I hope all you preppers enjoy the festivities and come back after Xmas raring and ready to go

We're taking advantage of the annual EVERYTHING MUST GO BECAUSE WE'RE CLOSED FOR A WHOLE DAY reductions this evening. The freezer is stuffed full of meat and fish and, although Himself still needs further training in the ways of Portioning it Up Beforehand, so there's some space wasted in accommodating stupidly oversized plastic packaging, the Dead Animal stores look quite promising. And there is still a drawer full of frozen fruits and vegetables, mostly flash frozen from fresh, ready for when things go silly with inbound shipping.
The tinned and dry goods provision is less than satisfactory, however, so after the next couple of days, I think the best course of action is to restock quickly.
Feline Catering is at an all time high - I took advantage of a black Friday discount and ordered two very large boxes of sacks of extremely expensive kibble, due to the Spoiled One's delicate constitution. The boxes have come in handy as well - they've been repurposed into a handy lair with 1st floor observation deck behind the armchair. Both animals are waddling around looking rather pleased with themselves each day and one's behind has expanded considerably - the upside of this is that he no longer feels such a desperate need to steal human food or bring rodents in for leisurely crunching in the warmth of the kitchen.
My herbs are doing well - I have a huge besom-sized bouquet of Rosemary hanging alongside the boiler - and the perennial spring onion that was forgotten around 4 years ago now has a small family of offspring in a windowbox.
I'm slightly concerned about the Dwarf Cherry. At last glance, it had reached about 10 foot high. Maybe this year, I'll actually get some cherries from it, as a combination of frost and pigeons has meant we've never had more than about 6 at best. Assuming I'll be able to reach the fruits, that is.
Himself is slowly learning, however. And I do have a blissful fortnight off work, so I should be able to do more whilst he's securely packed off back to gainful employment on Friday. Like hiding the large bag of reduced to clear alcoholic beverages he's also seen fit to start stockpiling.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
My husband has returned from bargain hunting at Tesco,we also now have a freezer full of meat and fish and buffet food (3 buffets planned over next 2 weeks) everything was 75% off.0

We shall be making a visit to the outdoors shop over the weekend and taking advantage of their sale to get any outdoor waterproofs that we need and possibly another pair of good sturdy boots each and also taking a look at their camping equipment too as I'd quite like a tripod to hang a cooking pot from over an open fire if we can find one, we shall also be visiting the supermarket (possibly Aldi) as last year they had Christmas cakes and puddings vastly reduced, one of which we had on Christmas day this year and it was really good.0

Today has produced more chicken and a fifth packet of mince. And a box of Strawberry Mivvis.
I don't think purchase of the latter constitutes effective disaster contingency planning, somehow.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
