Floss you need to renew the gas hoses pet, they will be perished or brittle. And renew the jubilee clips and the regulator as well.

100 friends arrange a dinner dance party at a venue which was voted for by 52 of the 100 people. Both venues promised certain things as part of the package.
Later, they find out that the dinner is actually riddled with salmonella, the dance music is the telly tubbies theme on repeat and the venue is actually a shed. There are no spoons for the gruel and the shed roof has holes in and there are no toilets.

Do they stick by the vote because democracy says 52 people voted for it? Or do they look at this new info and make an informed choice, potentially changing their minds?
Maybe the place the 52 voted for is a new business just starting out that is suffering teething pains and needs to find its feet and have people give it a chance to succeed.
While the place the 48 voted for is a massive chain run by a board only worrying about bottom lines and profit margins with no consideration for customer satisfaction where the 100 people will probably leave thinking it was mediocre at best and wished they had tried something else rather than going with the tried and tested format.
  • If posts are such that they offend because of the way they are worded then perhaps the responses shouldn't be such a surprise? Not agreeing with anything said already is absolutely your right, we are all different but derision and scorn will only ever elicit fairly abrupt responses so no, not surprising that the posts in reply are sharp!

Regarding the merits of solar, our new home we will be moving to in a couple of years had an ancient hot water solar system on the roof from the 1970s. We had quotes to update/replace/remove. £5K to update, £500 to remove. OK so we'd have free hot water, but considering washing machines don't even have hot fill anymore, £5K for showers and washing up was never going to add up, so we paid £500 to get it removed (it was jammed full of moss and had pipes leaking in the loft). It had cost about £500 to install in the 1970s.

We will be investigating PV when we move there for the purposes of having battery storage and being able to charge an electric car. One side of the roof faces almost directly south so should be a good option, plus we have a double length garage, plenty of storage space for a bank of batteries.

For living off grid and all sorts of most interesting things I throw into the melting pot THE CENTRE FOR ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY which is based in a disused slate quarry in Wales and is the source of all things ecological including books, courses, useful stuff and above all their expertise. T's a fantastic place and they have books and ideas for solar everything! Fuds how would a solar hot water system suit you? you could have it without having to have solar panels on the roof too and you could find some solar lights to charge up in daylight during the day and give you free light at night, much cheaper than solar panels!

Thanks for that.......I shall definitely take a look.....might even go for a visit sometime.

Going back to the Middle Ages??? I dont think anyone wants this......surely that's not what this thread is about. Isn't it about how best we can ride out any disruption to services whilst maintaining our comfortable 21st century lifestyles. Or have I missed something.

If we can take a few steps to become a bit more eco friendly and save some of the earths precious resources in the process then surely that's a win-win.

I would most definitely accept the democratic vote but the idea of attending a dinner dance would send me off planet no matter who was there, I can't imagine anything other than a cruise that I'd rather do less. Nothing to do with my politics love, just preference. I won't be drawn into an argument by anyone, you have your take as do I, as does everyone else, be free to think and feel whatever you want to, as am I and all the rest of humanity with my blessing and without reservation. I am just me, leave me if you can't take me xxx.

The Centre for Alternative Technology is my third most favouritist place in the world (after home and Glastonbury :D). It's an amazing community who were waaaay ahead of their time. it is so peaceful there - no traffic I guess.

    The cafe is good too.

Thanks for the info on PV and solar thermal, i will muse on it.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Can I please interject for some advice?

With regard to prepping clothing, I want to buy some lightweight wellie type boots that will last, but must have non slip soles or I will be airborne when the doggies pull. I have some crocs ones (bought in the sale, obviously) but the soles don't have an awful lot of grip.
Or even decent snow boots that don't look too "snowy".

I've been looking at Muck Boots, but some of the reviews say they leak rather quickly. I don't want to spend too much if I don't have to, but safety is my main concern because I'm out with the idiot dogs light and dark and they haven't yet realised I'm not designed to chase cats.

Does anyone have any ideas please?
