Prepping for Brexit thread

Today the prepping for all things not just Brexit ought to be checked over and gaps filled if there are any and not just for things from the EU. The world is becoming an increasingly turbulent place and I think that our tomorrows are not going to be as easy to live through as our yesterdays have been. This is only my gut feeling and not precipitated by anything other than that but I am going to up my preps a couple of gears because I feel that would be a sensible thing to do.0

I am back from our holiday. Lots of rain, but lots of fun had regardless.
Worth checking on essentials, torches, batteries etc, as the path of hurricane Lorenzo is still uncertain, but could still potentially hit the UK. Though hopefully will have downgraded to a storm by then, still the potential for very wet and windy, stormy weather (and therefore flooding and power cuts etc).
Harvested over a kilo of ripe tomatoes from the garden yesterday. Still plenty on the vine, though will likely have to pick and harvest indoors now. I 'crushed' and froze 1.6kg worth before our holiday, and still have a batch of tomato soup in the freezer too lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -
@Blue Doggy
I can't see a situation where we'd be short of tinned bits, unless it was something slightly 'not that popular' maybe.
I was actually thinking about potato's / some veg (carrots maybe) / meats such as lamb/pork/beef.
Although we export as far as I'm aware quite bit of lamb to the EU and elsewhere, along with beef/pork, we also import a lot from NZ there are various reasons for this historical being one of them. Mind you NZ was after a 'deal' months ago so there's no issue there! Point I'm making here is we should not be short of lamb/beef/pork fresh.
I'm pretty sure we export potato's too, as well as import from both N.I and R.O.I, the former is 'part of' so no concern, can't see any real issue with the latter either really, its not far!
Prices, well that's something that could be a complete can-of-worms.
I still work to my "keep 3 or so days worth of long life bits in" but I've done that for years, from being a carer amongst other things in the past. Simply say to yourself "If I cannot leave the house for any reason for 3/4 days, is there enough here" , does not matter if its not fresh things as no one will fall over if they have no bread for a day etc, as long as there's something to cook/eatAt least that's my theory.
@MrsLurcherWalker , I see what you're saying. I'm slightly reminded of those absolutely stupid riots in London (and more recently in H.K) in that I would bet the vast majority of those people were perfectly normal law abiding people, but followed some kind of sheep mentality unfortunately, All I think I mean is they would of never dreamed in 100 years of doing what they did if they had not *seen* others already doing it.
@euronoris Welcome back, good to know hols were still enjoyable despite weather. Sometimes its just the change of scenery that is all that is needed, although tis years and years ago now we had a week in Blackpool (slightly out of season at the time) and it rained nearly all the time! However it did not matter in the slightest (to me!) as it was a complete chance of surroundings/scenery and I enjoyed it!
Sounds like you have plenty of tomato's too! Well done. Potato's are on my eventual "to do list" but as I've mentioned elsewhere I'm really when I get to it planning on using some very different varieties.0 -

.
How many cans of worms do you recommend stock-piling?:rotfl: Although I guess there are plenty of those to go round at the moment.
Being October, I have now moved on to my "normal" winter prepping - just slightly ramped up to cover a possible Brexit transition period. I hate shopping in the first place, and am a bit unsteady on my feet so avoid going out in icy weather if I can. To that end I always have plenty of things of like baked beans, tinned tomatoes, dried (and tinned) pulses, pasta, rice, oats and tea. With those and the additions of whatever veg. I have in (either fresh, tinned or frozen) and some flavourings I can cobble together some decent meals for a few days. Bread flour, yeast and dried fruit is on my list for this week. I also look out for those small packets of bread mixes (such as foccacia or ciabatta) and if they are a reasonable price pick up a couple of those. Basic medicines are well stocked but I do keep adding to them, as well as toilet paper and cat food.
I am also currently eating down the freezer contents before a restock. Have just pulled out some pork belly slices from over 12 months ago so they are currently defrosting for tonight.0 -
Just to flag up that the large Tesco Extra store we visited yesterday had chick peas in the ethnic section of the supermarket at £1 for 4 x 400g tins which is the very best value by far that I've found of late.0

Hi AndyCF since there’s no knowing what the situation might be over the coming months, I want to be sure I have enough tinned tomatoes - I use a lot! - as well as extras of the normal tinned veg (not so many of those, as those which are grown in the UK should be ok). Tinned fruits of non-UK origin, and tinned beans also, and herbs and spices. It’s not so much that they’ll no longer be imported, but rather that there may be delays in transport until everything has settled down, and the hauliers know what the new systems require, and I expect there to be the odd price-rise here and there.
As far as meats, eggs and dairy products are concerned I mostly buy British so hope our farmers will still be producing and selling.
Apart from those my normal “in case of flu” supplies are fully stocked, I have bread flour and yeast, loo paper, aspirin and batteries.“Tomorrow is another day for decluttering.”Decluttering 2023 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️

dreaming stockpiled cans of worms :rotfl: I love it. I think the UK has over-production of these at present, so no need to stockpile them until the government-issue ones run out!
People are starting to promote the eating of insects including mealworms as an alternative protein source . Personally, I think mealworms are for the birds, they like ‘em! :rotfl:“Tomorrow is another day for decluttering.”Decluttering 2023 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️

Different supermarkets play different games - Asda recently stopped carrying KTC chickpeas but had their own at 33p a tin. Morrisons is absolutely worth checking as they appear to be slightly more culturally alert & thus their world food aisle can undercut their tinned veg - but you have to find & check both places. (Oh the tragedy - we came home with halal jelly crystals that made coloured flavoured sherbet, amongst other delights.) The big Tesco sometimes has KTC cans amongst the other cultures foods (I enjoy browsing the American & Irish sections as an ethnographic curiosity, & youngest has only recently decided he's too grown up for Reece's.)
I have another farmfoods sheet, good til 11 October & their (Irish) butter is still under a pound a block. (Has to be better for you than some emulsion?)0 -
@DigForVictory and @MrsLurcherWalker BM have those for about 30p or something per tin, so its an alternative cheap supply if needed.
I do have a general like of Morr's 'random tinned goodies' with a few small exceptions.
General comments:
No I don't tend to search for 'cans of worms', I'm not an angler! lol.
I do intend to spend more time in the local (the good one, there's two actually) Polish shop as its a small shop but they have a lot of variety of things some of which look quite fascinating, even things like curiously flavoured crisps. When the right lady is serving you also get proper help (not mocked!) and anything 'translated' you wish.
Regarding tinned bits of non UK origin, quite a lot of the well known brands are non-UK origin. They are usually EU based though but not always it seems.
Farmers well they are going to carry on hopefully they might get a better deal from the supermarkets too. I do occasionally see TV programs where they say "we got these from the farm shop" , that's all well and good if there's one near you I guess.Nearest farm here is about 7 miles, nearest farm shop is about 10 roughly that I'm aware of. Shame the really good butcher closed down but the other one is OK(ish) but does not sell some meats unfortunately. Mind you there's always Sains 30 min away if I feel the need for something different I suppose.

I managed to can some apples whoop gawd I'm rusty tho.. was trying to teach DS3 and things got a tad tense!
Result is I now have four less than perfectly packed pints sat cooling but bless him he's done it!!
I've just thought DS2 is currently in Germany anything he should be looking to bring back for me?? I am not a lover of their sausages etc and I don't drink mmm
Need to sort out a pile of peppers so may pressure can some seeing as it's out but that may be a step too far for him as it's a little noisy!
Failing that I think I will just pickle some and freeze the rest if I can play tetris with the freezer..0
