For the non luxury side of the prepping but something I would hate to be without as they make home cooked food in my opinion B & M are selling 24's of beef and chicken Oxo cubes at £1.49p. I think if we are on restricted availability of goods in the shops an oxo gravy makes even wartime veggie dishes taste fantastic.0

Bouillon in this house (Marigold have a vegan version which is really good). But you're right about Oxo, and it's designed to keep, other stock cubes tend to leak/collapse/degrade after mere months, but Oxo lasts forever...
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
You can even add oxo cube to leftover mashed potato (wartime recipe again) and make mock dripping to spread on toast, I've made it and it isn't half bad either!0

When I was first married and OH lost his job we used to "fake" spag.bol. by frying up some onion, a tin of tomatoes and an oxo cube. Served on spaghetti with a some grated chees it was actually ok. In fact, thinking about it I quite fancy some now.0

I agree. Oxo and other stock cubes can transform the humblest of ingredients into something very tasty and I like the idea of using mashed potatoes with Oxo to create mock dripping. Never tried that! I must use it to eke out the dripping (and the brown jelly residue) we get after roasting duck , which is something which is always fought over in our house !
I think the manufacturers of most commercial meat pies have turned the use of Oxo (or its equivalent) into to an art form as virtually the entire contents seem to consist of Oxo/Beef Stock rather than meat content !0 -

Actually some wartime recipes that are sensible and simple are probably worth posting perhaps... Not for 'shortage' reasons simply as an alternative. I'm quite sure there were some very good, sane sensible ones as well as a few that were not quite so good.0 -

Jolly good idea, and as I'm sure there are a lot of older fourumites on here who have valuable experience or knowledge in this field I' m posting a new thread on the topic so hints don,t get lost in the jungle of other threads.0 -

You're addressing someone who developed vegan dripping cakes (a long long time ago) - the secret is in the sesame seeds. I can't remember how I did it but I nailed the tangy brown versus lardy white meatiness and it tasted fantastic on a fresh oven bottom breadcake

DTR, if you want pound coins, most lottery places Thursday morning & Saturday morning.
My local used to empty the pool table when I went pleading for change for scouts - and some nights I’d get a shamefaced “sorry duck” when I went for a quiet pint & they’d emptied & banked the change!
The old services club kept the bar in change by emptying the machines, loading the tills & the secretary then tottered across the road to the bank with a wad of notes from the bar. Everyone happy even if it’s not really recommended to mix some of the ptsd meds & alcohol...0 -
The way things are going, we all need to learn how to make Wootton Pie- cos that's all we'll be able to afford. Things are looking bad, believe me - and I'm not one to get easily rattled. Not as in mass starvation - but in high prices and shortage of familiar foods. People who aren't preppers will be left struggling.
I remember the 3 day week and price hikes - I don't rememnber why prices rose but they really did. We were poor and things like potatoes & sugar got so dear I was struggling to manage.
These things happen and under this govt are going to happen again. Great idea to get some wartime cookbooks they sell on Amaz for pennies. Ingredients we grow here and should have plenty of. Pity they're all veg though eh... I wish we could grow sticky toffee pavlovas...0
