We have an automatic breadmaker - (marvellous piece of kit despite the amount of space it takes up in our small kitchen) but inadvertently ran out of yeast this week. None in our nearest Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco or health food shop. Eventually got the last two remaining packets in local convenience store so that was a bad slip up in our planning.

It's been some years since we last bought commercial bread - much prefer the various high fibre varieties we can make at home.

Every food order I do I order yeast and bread flour and have done for years so I always have a reasonable store of the stuff but since DS1 and his OH left we are only eating homemade now and boy we're motoring through the supplies so I need to tweak that to keep up with demand!

It's always between now and the new year that they are often out of stock Primrose around here that's how it is anyway :)
I've always put it down to breadmakers as xmas gifts but whatever the reason it's a pain!

I have spent this afternoon tidying and organising my store cupboard. I keep going down to the cellar to look at it, it makes me happy to see it all neat and tidy. Anyone else get pantry envy when they see photos of beautifully organised cupboards? They have to have proper food in them though, I get all tsk tsk when I see shelves and shelves of junk food (not talking tins of useful ingredients but the sort of thing that is passing itself off as food)
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

:) 72.2 % of registered voters took part the EU referendum.

Therefore, 27.8 % of registered voters didn't vote. A fair few of those who could have voted, had they registered, weren't registered, so don't even count towards the total electorate.

This means that upward of every fourth person who could have voted, didn't vote. CBA-ness would account for a big chunk of that.

I simply don't, despite mixing with several hundred people a month, ever encounter anyone with an opinion on Brexit more impassioned than a weary contempt for the whole drawn-out process, regardless of how (or even if) they chose to vote.

Of course, my region of the UK might be uniquely laid-back and indifferent to the muck sweat of the political and chattering classes of Westminster Village!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Parent's house (average northern semi) was built in 1923 and had a fantastic pantry that was inevitably spoiled by the arrival of the fridge freezer in maybe the late 70's. After leaving home to a series of dilapidated terraced houses where the traditional food storage area was the cellar head (unless you had a butchers block in the cellar) - when I finally got on the housing ladder, a proper pantry was a must have. Current house (1928 semi) has a lovely pantry set two steps down from the kitchen. Previous owners loaded it with a fridge & two freezers then clad it in some kind of weirdness to mitigate the damp conditions they'd created, so we ripped that out and started again. Got the original shelves, put in some cup hooks (or coop ooks) to hang onions etc. Got a big old shelf resting on wine racks for baskets of things like potatoes, and of course plenty of room for tins, kilner jars etc etc. And of course Cat is allowed in there whenever she wants just in case...

There’s a holiday cottage in Wales will with a “pig slab” for salting most of an animal on. With a little channel chiselled in all round and a drip off.

It’s usually just a dumping ground for fresh veg, but if the new owner hadn’t wanted it, I’d have remodelled my kitchen round it & then left it in my Will to St.Fagans, along with the cost of transportation. Three inch thick stone, bigger than most memorials & practical.

I really need to sharpen up my storage. I planned jam, saw a sack of sugar abandoned after refilling the daily use jar & presumed that was it. Bought three more robust sacks of sugar & found another two open sacks. Put them to use, repacked the third & stashed the lot carefully, muttering a bit. Mood improved by hearing a Kilner lid snap down. I do love that “tlock!”

I’ve got pantry envy reading all your posts! I only once had the luxury of a proper pantry - north facing, window with perforated zinc, slate slab and all. Sadly I was only renting it for a couple of years. Since then the most I’ve seen have been spaces where the pantry used to be before it was “opened out to make the kitchen bigger” or turned into a downstairs cloakroom :(

I’d pay good money for a house with a proper pantry!

:) Lovely to see the Mardatha log-in again. Will MingVase disappear forever now?
