I think if I fluttered my eyelashes at the coalman we'd all electric in a week. :D If brexit causes a price hike or a temporary shortage of calor gas then we'd have no heat, that is the problem. And having an electric fire wouldn't be a bad thing.. It wouldn't be used unless in an emergency.

Mar we bought the boys a cheapo one from Argos was around the forty quid mark I think and its been very good.
Small footprint on the floor and safe if you have any little visitors as it only has a grill at the top and doesn't get so hot to the touch that it burns you by accident!

It's up in the loft atm but OH has to get up there this week so will get the make of it for you if I can't spot it on argos or amazon.

We had one of those halogen things..an accident waiting to happen in our house.

This sounds good Mar. My back up is an oil free Dimplex convection heater. Not cheap but can find cheaper than list price. My living room is large and it gives out a good heat. Ist one had a timer but I found it a faff to use. My son borrowed it when the house they bought had bedrooms for the children on an unheated 2nd floor, never saw it again so bought no2. That lasted 4 years and it seems to be a common thing judging by reviews.

No 3 has lasted well. Only needed when gas fire cuts out as it doesn't like storm force winds . Lord knows why I ever chose this area to live!

Two things I've hung on to are thick hair and long eyelashes other than that not so alluring as back in the past . Coalmen are never seen here so no chance to test the eyelash fluttering.

I should have remembered that Mar. Thiking back to your "C" dinner (I ain't killing an elf!) and the roast lamb. I'm too busy trying to catch up on threads so a bit confuzzled.

Arghhh, I'm so behind on the thread. My weekend was not as productive as I would have liked. DD woke up with Croup at 2.30am on Sat night, and wouldn't go back to sleep. DH stayed up with her until 6am, and then I took over. I hate croup. It is utterly awful to her your 3 year old say 'Mummy, I can't breathe' to you. :'( Thankfully, she had a better night last night, but she was very clingy and grumpy yesterday.

I did, however, make a chocolate cake with her (to cheer her up). Realised, I need to restock a few items in the baking cupboard.

And later on, when DH was also up, I made us a hearty chicken and mushroom pie. Starting prepping it, and realised I had no mushrooms. Only tinned mushrooms that I had bought earlier in the year, before the date for Brexit was pushed back. I can confirm that tinned mushrooms in a pie are lovely! DD would have eaten them straight out of the tin if I had let her. Little mushroom fiend! So, now I am sure that they are fine for adding into recipes, I shall stock up on a few more tins.

I did at least manage to defrost the small freezer (the one above the fridge) on Sat night. And Sat morning I made some tomato puree with my ripe tomatoes, and green tomato chutney with my unripe ones (I still have soooo many!). So I guess I did more than I thought, just not everything I wanted.

Oh, must top up cocoa powder as well!

The big freezer is also a lot more organised now, and realised we have a fair few meals in there already, so will work out way through some of them too.

Re heaters, my DH has something similar to this for fishing, which keeps him toasty in a tent in freezing conditions:

So, if anyone is looking for a backup, this could be a solution.

Someone mentioned stock cubes recently, and not sure how cheap this is in comparison, but Lidl have 16 beef knorr stock cubes in for 99p. Just seen them on the shelf.
