In theory a Grab Bag is a good idea. After several visits to A&E in the middle of the night which have necessitated a hospital stay, my OH now has an overnight emergency bag packed, with a list of any last minute items to be added like his electric razor, plug and current medication supply.
I would think that anybody living in high rise flats which run a higher risk of evacuation might similarly find one useful.
But the question obviously arises, what is essential? Birth certificates, passport? What would cause you the most inconvenience and hassle if you were without them and had to replace them.. Permanently Lost documents and no personal reference numbers would be a bureaucratic nightmare
I would have to grab my laptop! On it is stored a document with all the names, addresses, reference nos etc of all our domestic suppliers, bank accounts, utility & insurance providers and other useful contacts. I imagine a printed copy would take less space and would also act as a useful reminder of all the contacts needed to be notified if a long term home evacuation was necessary.
I can imagine that by the time my own Grab a Bag exercise was completed , I'd need a thumping great suitcase and an Eddie Stobart truck to carry it!0 -
@mrslurcher @digforvictory
It's very American. As we don't live on land which has yearly severe weather like hurricanes, etc I was wondering why. The only thing I can put it down to is Brexit preparations as we've never been told this before. I'm suspecting that Operation Yellowhammer has looked at scenarios and riots/civil unrest has came out on top.
For me to be prepared I would need a bag each and 4 of everything!
As a prepper it does make sense, but a tad ominous. Someone texted this to me, I stupidly went onto Twitter to check it out (even though I promised myself to stay away). My feed was full of people screaming at Police Scotland doing their jobs. Shouting at them that they are terrifying the population. Give me strength. It's like people shouting at the British government issuing Anderson shelters during the war. "You're terrifying the population! I don't want to be bombed!"
So back to the level-headedness and common sense of Old Style.Just because I disagree with you, doesn't mean I hate you. We need to understand this as a Society

Was nothing to do with Brexit. It's from 30days30ways, all about increasing your preparedness and therefore resilience, throughout the month of September. They focus on a new thing each day.

The grab bag just garnered a lot of misinterpreted attention (ie, someone said it was linked to Brexit and that just took off on social media).
Here is a link to the actual list of items they recommend: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16lPxoJizHwFXlkJb1IemO-Zdgjq0-Ht7/view
Unsurprisingly, the papers have cut out the bits they found most interesting, and left the rest. ie, Cash is on the list, but was omitted from the papers interpretation.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Thanks Euronorris, as ever the voice of reason prevails when someone with feet on the ground and level headed thought processes explains it to you, bless you, you're a gem!
The 30 days for 30 ways site is inviting me to join in the 'Preparedness Games' a sure fire way of making me laugh out loud and not investigate any further into what is obviously going to be of use whatsoever. How cretinous to use the word games in conjunction with preparedness of any kind. Do they think we all have the mentality of 7 year olds?0 -
I remember when every house had a pulley in the kitchen - I wonder now if the clothes smelled of dinner when you put them on
My mother had a little three part airer, each prong about a foot long. It sat in the corner of the kitchen directly above the gas cooker, and the theory was that the heat from the pilot light would air whatever small items were above it. In practice I had to catch the school bus with my long white socks reeking of fried bacon! I had a Maid in Scotland and it was absolutely terrific with most items drying overnight in the kitchen which housed the boiler. In use it was not a thing of great beauty and these days it would be difficult to fit in a modern house with low ceilings and lots of doors.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

I feel sad that Police Scotland were at least trying to help and advise and yet everybody is moaning! Either we want prepping to be more widespread and informed, or we don't. Which is it?0

Definitely people need to be making preparations for what is likely (if it happens) to be the biggest change so far in any of our lives but to call it Preparedness Games is not going to make anyone take it seriously enough to act on the recommendations and that's just human nature. I understand why they can't just say get prepared for the juggernaut that's coming directly at you and there's no where for you to jump out of it's way BUT Games? surely that suggests it's fun and something to play at rather than seriously thinking what the future may hold and how it will affect your life?0

The clips did look slightly disturbing I must say, although they were probably intended to be and 'hard hitting possibilities' at those times! So many 'nearly' things I've read it is even now a concern to find out things when they are actually released after the 30-year odd rule, and you can easily bet a lot of info wil never see the light of day.
I don't think they would actually produce those kind of mini films these days, bit too 'hardcore' for people to cope with I expect.
That 'grab bag' idea, I'm not quite sure what to say!Why would one want a passport (I'm out of luck , I don't have one!) unless its for ID perhaps ? , hmm. Read it and decided that common sense will prevail for me, well hopefully. The items listed do not appear to form any common "grouping" either.

I quite like the attempt to include children & schools in the 'Games' but the lack of school pages suggests someone ran out of puff. The children's stuff apparently exists but was far to slow to load.
Also the endless Google linking makes it impossible to load at work (security) & tricky on the mobile.
The only Games many children are familiar with are the Olympic (every 4 years) and The Hunger (now well past cool book/film series) - I don't think either sit alongside the prepared mindset terribly comfortably.
The 'calling a disaster natural is a copout' idea when a better fairer society wouldn't lead to these inequalities is a bit idealistic - not everyone can afford a specific bag with extra clothing etc in it, phone charger bank etc.
It also puts a truck through the prepare in silence principle.0 -
My prepare in silence mode is always on and I won't be stupid enough to let it be otherwise for any reason on earth. If anyone gets wind of the fact that you have been forward looking enough to have made provision for shortages of food, power outs, water off and any other scenario you can imagine I suspect your house would be the first to be 'done over' by anyone who thinks they need things more than you do. I'll carry on prepping the way I have for the past 50 years and keep our heads well below the parapet and under the radar of everyone not family.
My screaming NOOOOO started when I read the words 'we want you to tell us if you have cash on hand' Oh my goodness me, that is surely the first step towards being burgled and losing a great deal more than your stash of food. I hope no one actually does this.....0
