The 30 days for 30 ways site is inviting me to join in the 'Preparedness Games' a sure fire way of making me laugh out loud and not investigate any further into what is obviously going to be of use whatsoever. How cretinous to use the word games in conjunction with preparedness of any kind. Do they think we all have the mentality of 7 year olds?
I've become very cynical about what is shared around on social media these days, as well as the headlines from ANY of the papers (some are certainly worse for it than others, but they are all guilty of 'clickbaiting').
About 95% of what I see on social media has been misinterpreted, sensationalised, cherry picked, massively exaggerated or is years old. So I've developed a habit whereby if something catches my eye, I do a little independent digging to get the facts.
It's a tad depressing how much misinformation is out there now.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I'm lucky in that I don't actually make contact with the outside world other than here and in person. I don't and won't do Facebook, twitter or any of the other media methods for exposing yourself to the trolls. I do watch TV and we do take a paper but are both highly sceptical of all and any news that is on either. My phone is very non tech and I haven't a single app to my name I'm pleased to say. I do however have a wind up radio so all is not stone age.....0

My personal favourite at the moment is the headlines from the daily rags saying that (hurricane) Dorian and storm Gabrielle are going to collide and create some 'Day After Tomorrow' doomsday scenario for the UK. All whilst showing pictures of Dorian as it was when it was a cat 5. And still referring to it as a hurricane when it has been downgraded.
I've been following that storm closely, and it's past and predicted path. What the daily rags are suggesting is ludicrous! Yes, it is possible that Gabrielle will absorb the remnants of Dorian, but only because it will be dissipating by then anyway. And we're only likely to see the tail end of Gabrielle as well, when the winds will have reduced significantly.
And then of course, is the point that it will only likely touch part of the UK, not the whole of the UK as the papers always like to suggest with their headlines. And that's if it reaches us at all and doesn't dissipate completely before then, or change course.
Such scaremongering from them to sell papers!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Prepping is NOT a game, it should not be portrayed as a game in which you can earn points, that diminishes totally the urgency in which it needs to be done. Prepping ought to be from conviction and self preservation and not as a tick list where you are asked to share the information of what you have achieved with an unknown third party. As well have your locks removed and the doors taken off and a notice painted on the outside of your house saying 'free please take'.0

I think it's their take on the US version of September being the preparedness month, all sorts going on out there usually.
I think any attempt to get people to think about how they would react to certain situations is a good thing, however ham fisted the attempts are, at least they're trying to help and advise??
Lets face it online now, especially on the twitter sphere, you have so many people who are perpetually offended by something, half the time before anyone even gives an opinion so they are never going to please everyone!!
I think like Euro Norris in that I see an article and the do my own research and use any info relevant to our situation and just ignore anything that isn't...I don't jump on twitter and start screaming about things I might not agree with and maybe I'm just getting old but what a waste of energy and time which could be put to good use!!
MrsL same here re Facebook etc I've never seen the appeal really? I enjoy this forum 'cos I learn stuff and it's constructive.
I do enjoy reading a paper usually but have actually given that up atm because of the hysteria surrounding well just about every headline lol...
Andy lovely list! I see a few things on there which can make a good couple of meals at least. I finally found a tin of potatoes which the men don't realise is 'a tin of potatoes' cos I usually slice them and fry them up or roast them with lots of seasoning. I also got away with a tin of minced beef and onion with mashed potato packet on top (Idaho ones) so my storage dinner list is expanding!0 -

This surprises some as I am reasonably versed in some 'tech' but not all of it. A windy radio is on my eventual purchase list actually as I used to have a £3 bargain shop one that took a couple of AA batteries but it eventually decided I'd had my monies worth after about 5 years! :rotfl:

If anyone gets wind of the fact that you have been forward looking enough to have made provision for shortages of food, power outs, water off and any other scenario you can imagine I suspect your house would be the first to be 'done over' by anyone who thinks they need things more than you do. I'll carry on prepping the way I have for the past 50 years and keep our heads well below the parapet and under the radar of everyone not family.
My screaming NOOOOO started when I read the words 'we want you to tell us if you have cash on hand' Oh my goodness me, that is surely the first step towards being burgled and losing a great deal more than your stash of food. I hope no one actually does this.....I just try to ensure that "if I can't go anywhere for a few days I have something here"

I suspect they are trying to engage the youth. Those who may still be in the mind set of 'it'll never happen to me' and have given no thought to any sort of prepping. A large proportion of which use social media frequently throughout the day.
Sadly, I fear it'll either come across as condescending, or just really cringe worthy. A bit like when they tried to put everything into a rap when I was a teenager, because they (mistakenly) thought it would make it cool and therefore be more readily digested by the younger generations. It had the exact opposite effect!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
I do live in a high rise building, albeit on the ground floor, and know of several cases of no-notice evacs of similar buildings so have a grab bag which is a secondhand 35l backpack.
Cheap polyester/ nylon bags can be bought for well under £1 at a bootsale and I feel the affordability of stocking such a bag with a few bits and bobs from the rest of your household is no barrier to entry to even the smallest wallet. But what people do is their business.
My father was driven (by my mother) to their local hospital with what turned out to be a retinal detachment. They were then sent to the big regional hospital, over an hour's run from home (and they had already driven for 30 minutes in another direction to get to the district hospital. Dad was admutted with nothing and was in there for days. So Mum had to drive back, pack his bag, and drive it out there again, then drive back.
Five minutes gathering pjs, toiletries etc before the original journey would have saved a lot of hassle, extra expenditures of fuel and wear and tear on the nerves.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
I wonder if we'll look back at these turbulent and divided days in a few years time and wonder what on earth all the confusion and blame and rage was all about? I can usually make an educated guess as to how our lives will be as the years go on but today, in this climate of uncertainty and infighting between not just the members of parliament but the whole nation I am staring at a blank wall and cannot see through it, round it, over or under it and I have no idea what is going to happen now or in the future. It's unsettling at its mildest and infuriating as there seems to be no ending in sight and no individual or group seems capable of making a decision that will move us forward. It's an unseemly scrabble for an unknown future and I don't like it one tiny bit!0
