Yep - Cast In Style is where we got our original ceiling mounted ones, but, they also do wall mounted. You can get cheaper, but the laths are planed to the correct size for the castings (or they were when I got them) so they feel a lot more solid and less wobbly

We have the wall mounted one in the conservatory with the extended laths at about 7' - very useful and unobtrusive
I did think a bit more about the wall mounted ones , I concluded (as my first thought was "that would take space") but I bet a pound to a penny they fold flat or near flat when empty so take up very little space. :)

:D Rarely unless there was a kitchen burning accident! :o

Without venturing downstairs to measure, with the laths folded up it protrudes about 3" from the wall at the bottom, and maybe 4-5" at the top

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

OOh that's like my lethal weapon one lol My mum gave me one around twenty five years ago and its still going strong but mine is on legs and its the legs that are lethal!
Its solid metal but the legs fold upward and are held under a springcatch thing which,as it's the thing you tend to grab when you move it or pick it up to use it ,release said legs usually right on a toe!!

I imagine as long as it sort of 'folds in' when empty so its not eating say a foot of room space, its good. :)

I'm unsure if I need a new topic for pantry essentials or if this one is suitable, its partly brexy but partly not.

Yeah it looks like a long metal pipe Andy I have no clue where it came from but its older than me she thinks!!

I think there is a storecupboard essentials thread somewhere but I looove reading pantry lists and admit to being a little hooked on the pantry makeovers on UTube :) I always spot something I have forgotten usually..
It always helps to bounce ideas off others I think and I like to read others perspectives on why they prep certain items I've learnt so much here and some items have a multitude of uses I'd never even considered eg tumble dryer fluff for firelighting, likewise wirewool and foil plus a battery!

Its not really a pantry list I suppose it comes from being a carer and having to ensure 'something easy' was available, excluding a couple of 'emergency' frozen ready meals. Anyway I try to keep the following in, I'm afraid it is not very exciting :(:)

Tin of new potato's - Usually well known brand they are cheap with a bit of hunting anyway.

Two tins of carrots, ideally baby ones but sliced work fine
As above but pea's , where possible small tins. I know frozen are a bit better but they would defrost in the pantry ;)

Sweetcorn either the 'big person' 3pack or supermarkets offers, currently there's two cheapy ones and a special 'with peppers' one there too.

    Pack of instant soup-in-cup

    One noodle pot thing

Not currently there but a couple of tins of soup, pea+ham (B brand) is cheap at the moment 50p and quite nice but the tins are small.

Unfortunately for me I can't really stomach tomato in quantity so my soup choice is highly limited as the majority of them contain it. Generally speaking the ingredient list is in quantity order, so if its within the 'top three' its out, if its within the 'top five' its a bit of caution. I do love that chunky veg soup but its difficult to get it locally at a sensible price.

Currently there's also 'French brand' a tin of mixed peas/corn and peas/carrots, had good reviews generally so I thought I best try.

Meat eaters may wish to consider a small tin of ham/luncheon meat/chicken or if like me a small tin of meatballs in gravy.

I suppose its just 'tinned essentials' really! I do have a fridge ;)

So woke up to this, this morning. Police Scotland encouraging people to have an emergency grab bag. As far as I'm aware this is being rolled out to all Police forces across the UK.

    https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9890084/grab-bag-online-campaign-police-uk/

I remember a few months ago someone mentioned that the closer we get the more people will start prepping. I think it's starting now.

P.s sorry it's a link to the Sun. I don't usually read it, but it's the only one I could get with a link for you all.

  • Interesting! I wonder what the reasoning is behind the advice other than it being a common sense thing to have set up? I wonder if they are anticipating widespread disruption the further along the path we go towards the end of October with this uncertainty hanging over us and the public mood growing increasingly furious. No advice of that nature here in our (admittedly somewhat rural and backwatery) neck of the woods but it's an interesting development. Will you let us know if you find the reason and if anything else is recommended as it would be a good thing to know?

That is deeply, intriguing. I've colleagues with different first aid kits for different activities (and one who has an ex military rucksack with the medics sidepockets - not loaded with *identical* items as morphine isn't easily obtained or left behind one zip but with much of the tackle and a professional amount of training)

Just what is a Scottish mother of three expected to carry - her own kit, or everything for everyone (as usual) plus the (unmentioned) cash? Frankly I am concerned as my Scouts can pack better - if told what to prepare for, & that is missing things - like cash, and presuming things - like a plan. (Should we draft a better bag for the bachelor & the parent?!)

I do wonder where they lifted the idea from, as I rather sense the weaponry & ammo were omitted for cultural reasons. Plus where did "September is Preparedness Month"come form? Much more back to school & last of summer fruit and start of autumn fruit jam, pickle & other laying down preserves round my way!
