CW - agree it is really sad. There are plenty of younger neighbours in the road, but they hadn't even bothered to clear their own driveway, so no chance they would do it for any of the older neighbours.0

SnD really sad to hear that they couldnt think of those that would need some help.

Thanks PM and everybody else. Think we made right decision - today its been so cold witha really biting wind and all we would have wanted to do is stay in and keep warm lol which we can do at home in comfort:)
Can't argue with Mother Nature can we.0 -
That's a shame about your weekend TS but very sensible given the conditions - and it's not exactly weather you'd enjoy being out and about in anyway if you did make it. Very decent of the De Vere to move the booking, I guess they've prob had lots of guests affected by the weather. Still, its something nice to look forward to next month when hopefully we'll have something other than rain and snow. xx
Yes Kerri - can't fault hotel and even though its not out fault it was very good of them:)0 -
TS - Really impressed with De Vere Hotels letting you change your booking. So nice to hear a story like that for a change. Just so sorry that you didn't get away as planned, but it does make sense to postpone.
When I was growing up, we lived in the same road as my grandparents and my mum's two sisters. My nan had a daughter and family living either side of her. It was a very short road of terraced houses in the North West, but everyone had their door open for anyone to knock and walk in. They were such lovely days. It was a shock to me when I got married and moved to the Bristol area. It seemed that you couldn't go and knock on someone's door without an appointment. Although the people were friendly, it lacked the welcome I had grown up with. Likewise, I felt that no-one ever just called in for coffee or to say hello without "making an appointment" first. I found this really difficult, but eventually made friends who would just knock on the door to say hello.
I guess some people like spontaneity and other don't. Even now, I love people to just call if they are passing. They just have to take me as they find me lol
Thanks SnD - like the other drivellers you are right and although its maybe not what we wanted at least we are not as badly affected as some poor peeps:)0 -

Was coming on to post unless you know the route you will be travelling best to stay put, as snow no where near as bad here as other places yet can't read any road signs as covered in snow whole way home  so no good if get lost:( you would think gravity would make it fall off. So think you have made a very wise decision.
Thanks for the advice AH - awful driving conditions would have only added to our problems methinks :eek:0 -

We made a massive fuss the next morning and asked the manager to come and see us at our caravan, ended up with free meals in the restaurant for the 2 week stay which saved us a pretty packet. This was probably our worst problem but quite a major one I thought. You do have the option I suppose if have a big enough vehicle to take your own bedding and plenty of CIFF:rotfl:I would always recommend hiring the highest accomadation as they tend to have the newest of facilities and if not at high standard have reason to complain. We used to take our own sheets for DS2 as he always used to end up with a rash first night sleeping there so think it was what ever they used to clean them with.
Like everything there is good and bad - I too have a horror story. We had booked for a Pontins break in a chalet in Somerset and turned up not expecting too much but what I saw has put me off for life unfortunately. The windows were filthy, the cooker was dirty, the beds were no more than camp beds, the furniture was disgusting and as for the floor - yuck :eek::eek:
I wiped my feet on the way out. Went to reception and told receptionist that I wouldn't let my dog stay in that accomodation. When she asked if there was anything she could do I replied 'yes bomb it' but she didn't see the funny side of that. Never ever again :eek::mad::(0 -
