Scaremongering at Dixons/PC World!

Vast majority of their "refurbs" have simply had the box opened and then the device returned.
Still brand new and still an "apple" - but cheaper.
And just to clarify - if it has been out with a customer and switched on it will have to go through their repackaging and refurb process and windows reset / reinstalled.
And a refurb could mean returned faulty and fixed.
It "might" mean the customer opened the box, opened it, then sent it back but its certainly by no means a given and absolutely not guaranteed.
You might get lucky and thats all its been. However its still a refurb and priced accordingly by Dell, relative to the fact its no longer new, unused.0 -
Under Consumer law you cant sell a refurb as new, because well, because its a refurb! Like buying a pre-reg car. You have to be told and it makes a differentiator in the price. You can dance around that all day, however comparing a brand new unboxed unopened laptop to a refurb one is not comparing apples with apples.
Sorry you're still not grasping that.....
Im sorry that you are still not grasping that the vast majority of these machines ARE brand new, they have simply had the box opened and then returned for whatever reason.
They cannot be then sold as "new" and therefore are sold as "refurb" , when actually there is , nor has there ever been anything wrong with them whatsoever - and infact are still applesI'm not defending the behaviour -
Well you are doing a very good impression thenAs i said <snip>....

It's seems that every time you lose one argument, you simply focus on something else.
Semantics between 'scaremongering' and 'misleading' when in fact clearly guilty of both.
Suggesting that we are comparing apples and oranges when it has clearly been demonstrated we are comparing apples with apples, albeit with one in it's original packaging and the other checked for worms and blemishes and repacked. Them still apples.
So now you are banging on about Refurbs. I'm perfectly happy for someone to check a machine over before they send it out to me and in doing so, give me a 37% discount on the PC World 'new' price.
You are clearly on the losing side, with absolutely no one agreeing with you. But yet you seem to carry on and on.
Perversely, you accuse others of wanting to win an argument with a stranger over the Internet.Look in the mirror my friend. You've made more posts than any other person on this thread.

You absolutely CANNOT guarantee that - nor can DELL thats why they are marked as REFURB.
Do you really think if Dell could get away with asking full price for them they'd be marking them up as REFURB? Of course not. They are legally obliged to give their true status.
Id prefer to do business with honest people - not ones who have to lie and use peoples lack of knowledge against them - perhaps it's just me
Ah right - you're "outraged" for other people then?
Your brain must explode when you walk down a high street - all those businesses making money off people. Oh the Humanity!0 -
Been asked to set up a new PC for someone.
They ordered it from Dixons/PC World in Wrexham.
It was collected by their mum so I was a bit shocked by the scaremongering handwritten note on the box
Maybe Dion needed a couple of more sales to meet his target for May!
They're on commission to be fair and their base salaries are pretty poor. A little bit above minimum wage. Can you blame them for being a bit flexible with the truth? It's not nice and I don't like it, and it gives people who work in the IT sector (I'm a software engineer, but most people assume that because I've written software I also know lots about PC's in general) a really really bad name, but the solution is to pay a little more to your employees, and trust them to be honest. PC World don't operate like that. They overprice their products and borderline underpay their staff.
I have never worked at PC World, but I have had friends who did and most of them said they weren't necessarily encouraged to upsell useless junk, but it was in their interest to do so. Selling extended warranties and protection on almost anything was pretty commonplace.0 -

And likewise - i'm quite happy to buy refurbs from Dell. Have done loads of time in the past, but its a REFURB. Not a brand new untouched item - hence why its cheaper! There are reasons why it cant be sold as brand new.
I dont give a monkeys if someone who is "outraged", "disgusted", "upset", "shocked" or who for some reason would rather "stick hot pins in their eyes" cant grasp the banality of their reaction. Doesnt mean it shouldnt be pointed out though.
No need to feel outraged upset shocked or disgusted that a retailer is trying to upsell insurance or extra software and cant compete with the prices of refurbed items for sale on the internet - just go somewhere else.
If you dont like dealing with them - dont. Simples.
I'll leave you to it to be "outraged" among yourselves.0 -
I actually can't see why people are annoyed by the accidental damage part either. He's said it's not covered. You might not need accidental damage, but someone else might. I don't think that part is unreasonable at all. The questionable one is about free software.0

What note is everyone referring too ? - can't see it ? - no clickable link ?
Chrome is showing nothing !
Only by checking "view source" am I convinced there really is a link there
Try in in Explorer and there it is
Odd browser bug to show nothing at all !
I posted it originally in Firefox - just looked in Chrome and it's showing fine there too.
It may be your settings???0 -

People are giving 'motorguy' a hard time, but this part in bold is pretty much the long and short of it. I don't like PC World, so I've not been in probably 10 years. I don't like Curry's, I've been once to take advantage of an offer, in about 10 years.
People aren't vulnerable because they don't understand computers. That means everyone is vulnerable of something. Everytime I go to a coffee shop, I am vulnerable because I don't understand the coffee as good as the barista behind the counter.
Blameless Britain. Let's blame someone else because I really couldn't be bothered to find out whether accidental damage was required for my lifestyle. With respect, a lot of the questions are answered with a 5 minute Google search.0
