Perhaps you are unable to comprehend the statement "There is no Internet security, so you will need to get some".

    An interesting statement when within their sales blurb for the laptop, they state ;

So...misleading. Get it? I'm sure you do. ;)

The actual thread title references SCAREMONGERING, not "misleading".

And "Internet Security" is not just Antivirus. Get it? I'm sure you do. ;)

Windows Defender covers an aspect of internet security but doesnt cover Anti-malware and Anti-exploit. PC World - a retail company, not a charity or a self help group - will happily sell you full Internet Security - which they state in the advert for the laptop - "This PC doesn't come with a full version of Microsoft Office or Internet Security. But don't worry, you'll find great savings on software with the bundles available on the !!!8216;Top Deals' tab on this page."

Dell Outlet? Yes, most are happy with their 'refurbs', which are often appear untouched.
I bought an 'as new' refurb nearly nine years ago...and am using it to create this post.

So if you prefer to spend £130 more for exactly the same laptop, then more power to your wallet.
Of course we know that you don't and prefer to head straight for the Outlet, because you know it makes sense.
This is a website dedicated to saving money.. If that premise bothers you, why are you here?

Because quite simply you're not comparing Apples with Apples.

If you went and bought a new Apple iPhone or bought a brand new laptop after it being a return would you really be accepting someone saying "oh sure its just the same thing"

    No? Though not.

You're comparing a refurb or scratch & dent laptop with a brand new one - even DELL differentiate in their pricing between those and brand new laptops on their site - because there is a difference.

Its a REFURB. Its been returned, hence why even Dell themselves cant resell it at full new price. Sorry you cant grasp simple consumer law.

Check any reputable independent source and they will tell you that no one solution guarantees you full Internet Security protection - hence why PC World / Currys will try to upsell a (more) complete solution.

You clearly need to "win" an argument on the internet with a stranger which i guess doesnt surprise me given how you're "outraged" and "disgusted" by simple upselling by a retailer.

Theres many many things happening in the world that should outrage and disgust you - PC World trying to flog someone insurance and upgrades wouldnt make my top 100 but if in your world its hugely important then thats your problem.

I really dont know what peoples expectations of a retailer are that they get so upset (for other people clearly as they themselves are far too intelligent to fall for their rouse of course) when they try to upsell. I go in, buy something and leave. I politely decline things i dont want or can get cheaper elsewhere.

Profit margins on consumer electronics are miniscule. It doesnt surprise me at at that they pitch add ons.

A retailer trying to upsell doesnt leave me feeling offended, hurt, betrayed, outraged or disgusted.

They're not there to be your friend or to make sure i get everything free - they're there to try to make money off you.

Sorry if this news upsets some people.

Vast majority of their "refurbs" have simply had the box opened and then the device returned.
Still brand new and still an "apple" - but cheaper.

No, they will try to sell you a completely garbage solution - with the sole goal of making as much as they can from you with complete disregard of your interests.

The note is shocking - and a prime example of PC worlds horrible tactics preying on peoples insecurities and lack of knowledge.

Not sure why motorguy feels the need to defend this behaviour, but sticking a hand written note to a machine, telling the purchaser that there is no internet security on it is blatant lying and a prime example of this crap companies ethics.

I had my mother call me from the store one day because she was trying to buy a tablet and the sales droid was insisting that if she didnt buy norton internet security for it then her world would come to an end !!

I would rather stick hot pins in my eyes than shop at this chain, they will only get away with this behaviour for so long before they implode

Under Consumer law you cant sell a refurb as new, because well, because its a refurb! Like buying a pre-reg car. You have to be told and it makes a differentiator in the price. You can dance around that all day, however comparing a brand new unboxed unopened laptop to a refurb one is not comparing apples with apples.

Sorry you're still not grasping that.

I'm not defending the behaviour - i just dont find it shocking, outrageous, disgusting or whatever other extreme word you can come up with to over emphasise simple upselling.

As i said if this is what it takes to get you "outraged" or "disgusted" or "shocked", then really you need to take a look around you in the world at some of the horrors happening - PC World trying to upsell some insurance and software, not so much

I guess i shouldnt be surprised - the Daily Mail started it and now we've all the clickbait news story headlines and outrage and shocking behaviours - its hardly a surprise now that people have lost a grasp of what the words really mean and what they should really be outraged at.

It'll probably turn up in the Daily Mail at some point with the O/P holding the invoice and standing with a sadface beside it....

    Really.....?

Well i guess if you're outraged then thats the sort of thing you'd do....
