Work colleague belittled/bullied
killergibbo
A apprentice told a manager that she wasn’t able to do some of the admin work being asked of her and asked if the manager could help. The manager replied “yes this is why I’m paid £14 more then you”
Keeping in mind the apprentice is earning £3.70 a hour she found this very upsetting.
Would you class this as belittling, bullying?

Technically it may be true (and not illegal to say), either way you are all adults just get on with the job then go home and stop interfering in other peoples business.0

No it's not bullying. The manager was stating fact both in saying he could help her and saying that he way paid more than her in order to do so.
If the apprentice is upset by a comment like that then she needs to toughen up if she's to survive in the workplace.0 -

Not at all. And it’s true, he is paid more because he CAN do things and he is there to train her!
She’s on 3.70. It shouldn’t be shocking or belittling for her to find out other people are paid more...0 -
She's learned early on that some colleagues are idiots and talk out of the wrong orifice.0

This is stupid. The fact that it's true doesn't mean it's not bullying. It might not be illegal, but it is probably against the terms of the manager's contract to discuss salary and he should probably be reported to HRNo it's not bullying. You don't know that it's fact. Plenty of idiots make it to manager level.marliepanda wrote: »Not at all. And it!!!8217;s true, he is paid more because he CAN do things and he is there to train her!
Again, you don't know anyone of this to be true
She!!!8217;s on 3.70. It shouldn!!!8217;t be shocking or belittling for her to find out other people are paid more...
Missing the point completely. Is it ok for the manager to call other people stupid because he has an A level and they don't?
It's absolutely bizarre that you people think that someone of seniority is allowed to behave like that because that's just the way it is. This one instance is likely to be one of many.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0 -

So long as she gets the help she needs, learning both to do the admin stuff & to cope with a manger with a different sense of humour?
I'd much rather have an awkward so-&-so in the office than in the family. There's legal protection & anyway I can always get another job. Family you're a bit stuck with.0 -

He didn't call anyone stupid. he said he is paid more than an apprentice, a fact which should not come as news to anyone...
Telling someone 'yes I can help you, thats why I get more money!' is not bullying. Not even close. Do you know what bullying is?
The apprentice is more than welcome to report the manager to HR, that is if she has no intention of finishing her apprenticeship.
What is it with mountains out of molehills on this forum at the moment. There are so many battles in life, don't create your own!0 -

How many times have you told a work colleague you earn more than them?Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0 -
How many times have you told a work colleague you earn more than them?
It's irrelevant!
I have however, said 'this is why I'm in X department and not you!' (X department does come with a higher wage, like, shock horror, managers vs apprentices) when someone comes to me with something theyve messed up. Its always with good humour, and not once has someone had a whiny fit to HR about it...0
