Hi
I too am dipping my toe into the modern world of dating!
Like you I have had two long term relationships, haven't been single since I was about 15/16 and am finding the whole thing a bit daunting!
I have friends who use POF but my impression of it, from what they have told me, is that it is just a meat market and I'm really not interested in that!
I agree Guardian Soulmates sounds a bit too 'high brow' for me but I have been tempted by Elite Singles, made a profile, got a few responses and quickly deleted my profile again! I think the thing that worries me is knowing if someone is genuine, after all we can portray ourselves as anything we want to be online!
Good luck OP, I will be interested to see which sites are recommended!

I used zoosk for a month (I did pay for it). I had several dates with some very nice women. One of them was so nice, I'm no longer on the site. I found sending very short but polite messages always got a reply and conversations going. Everytime I put effort into a long introduction I got nada, nothing, nowt.
Good luck what ever you use.Come on sucker lick my battery0 -
I met my husband on Match.com five years ago. It was the last day of my subscription and the first day of his...I think he's still upset that he paid for 6 months in advance!! We've now been married almost three years and I'm expecting twins in August. :j
I would totally agree with LavenderBee's comment in #5; my husband's first message was well written, showed he had taken the time to read my profile and wasn't just 'Hi', expecting me to do all the work!
Good luck - it can work!!!"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." I agree with many of the comments posted. It is hard, whoever you are and I think a bit of luck is involved.
I am on Elite Singles (joined about 2 months ago).
I am a single female with 2 young boys. Most men either have grown up children and don't want to go there again, or their children live with their exes, and so they don't want to give up their free time.
I have been really open minded and have made contact with well over half my 'matches' with only a small amount of short replies. I haven't got near the stage of meeting anyone. The only keen ones have been clearly after no ties sex  (okay, if that's what you're after, but you can get that down the pub....). Most don't respond at all.
It's lucky I have low expectations, and it's safe to say that I won't be renewing my subscription.
Good luck to everyone out there.0 -

We were on PoF which is free, but both on the verge of packing it in based on our experiences. Just to add to what others have said, now-DH's first message was well considered, but short, not a huge life story/missive.
AlwaysWorking and I appear to have similar experiences! DH and I have been together 5.5 years, married for just over 2, expecting our first baby next month. Hope that gives you some hope OP0 -
There is midsummerseve.com its free for basic profile and messaging, but not a very busy site like POF. I have met a couple of people off it but still looking0

The site I'm on is something like 90% men and most of them can't manage more than 2 words as an introductory message. I did try POF but there were only 6 people within a 30 mile radius.0
