    It certainly seems that way.

There is no way there's a 4-5mile road without any opportunity to pass - it's either two-lane, or there's going to be passing places. B'sides, most truly "winding country lanes" are NSL, not 30.

Then we discover it's a trunk route, the A39...?!

Nah, credibility is stretched too far.

There a lot of single track "winding lanes" around here that are NSL, but you'd have to be crazy to do that on them. The marks on the hedges show those that tried.
I can't think of many though where there is nowhere to pass for miles, assuming an emergency vehicle behind, or where the road doesn't widen after a short distance. The most I can think of is probably about a mile, if that.

I've been up the A39, but it's some time ago. I remember it as a "normal" country road, which is borne out by Google.

If there's nowhere to let a following emergency vehicle past, then there's nowhere to let an oncoming vehicle past, either. And who's ever had to reverse for half a mile or more to do that...?

The A39 is quite twisty in places, but I don't recall it being single track anywhere apart from a short stretch approaching Porlock hill coming out of Porlock (unless talking about the toll road, which is a different kettle of fish entirely), so the answer is slow down to a stop and pull over to the kerb so the emergency services can pass you on the other side of the road with minimal risk to themselves or oncoming traffic.

A mile's probably an exaggeration. I can think of a few places in Cornwall that are a long reverse if you meet anything. Have a look at some of the more remote ones around St Keverne, and up near Mevagissey, and on the Roseland Peninsula.

Unless she was driving a bus or taxi, she had no right to enter the bus lane.
Then why do emergency vehicles force members of the public (motorists) into bus lanes? I've had it happen to me but knowing the bus lane was in force and that there are enforcement cameras, I remained in my lane in line with the law.

Interestingly the emergency vehicle chose not to use the bus lane themselves

the transit came past me with the police passenger leaning out of the window screaming "at last....." to me.
It reads that until you pulled over you made no acknowledgement to the driver of the police transit that they were behind you - I'm not surprised they were leaning out shouting.

Indicate, slow down, stop (if needed). If on a single track lane carry on to the next passing place (which are usually within line of sight of each other - certainly not miles apart). The driver of the emergency vehicle will then work out their best way of getting past you.
  • Most police are just bullies. If you have it on dashcam of them hanging out the window making hand gestures and swearing at you then I would put in an official complaint.

When did the OP mention "making hand gestures and swearing"?
