I have had a vax and now Iv got a george which is much better.
  • Just been reading threads here and elsewhere as well as review sites and I am still none the wiser!!

We have cream carpets in the bedrooms and lounge and a dark carpet in the hall. We have two dogs and children and the carpets despite cleaning often, get grubby quick. We have used professional carpet cleaners and they are charging about £50-80 for the lounge and when we had the house done, £110 all in. They have done a pretty good job to be fair, and the carpets always end reasonably dry at the end BUT doing this twice a year is equivilant to buying a domestic machine.....so we have been thinking.

We could rent a Rug Doctor as they seem to be good value and have a good reputation BUT I don't seem to have much luck with renting stuff and looking at the state of the machines locally, not sure I want to rent and transfer muck from other carpets into ours! There is also the on-going costs and while cheaper than a professional, still add up over time.

My current thinking is to get a Vax or Bissell or similar and do it ourselves once every three months or so, so higher frequency of cleaning (to equate with professional cleaning of lower frequency), but are they any good?

I have seen some YouTube video of the Vax DualV and it seems impressive (users, not Vax Ads). Reviews seem good if you get a good machine, but it seems there are some pups out there. The Bissell seems a better made machine but not so reliable! Both are similar prices.

So what's the answer? What's the best cost effective solution? Any users of either machine want to comment?

  • Well in answer to myself, we got a Vax Rapide+ and it is very good so far. Bought up a suprising amount of dirt from an apparently clean carpet and removed two stains. In fact as it dried you could see the bits I had missed.....yuk!

  • Recently bought a Bissell Cleanview Deep Clean. This has an inbuilt water heater and two rows of rotating cleaning brushes. It comes with a Bissell 5 year guarantee, works quite well, leaves the carpet reasonably dry (carpet dries completely overnight) and is selling at 25% off in Argos at the moment.
