  • In to the city today for work but I took lunch in with me. I am going to give up sugar for October to see if I can even out my moods and control my eating a bit better. I have already been having coffee before 10am to relaxe me. I had a practice run at no sugar today. It was hard. I cracked at 1pm and ate 2 Kind bars! Then I bought apples and that helped a little. ;)

I ordered a lunch box. It is stainless steel and vacuum sealed so I can pack it at night and throw it in my bag in the morning. It is a little pricey :o but I love it and if I use it, it will pay for itself in no time. ;)

I have realised that I have multiple bags being used at once. For impromptu walking I need a rucksack with lots of compartments. I also need to ensure I wear walking shoes permanently. The idea is to make exercise and good eating a natural part of my life.;)

I am trying to change by doing things differently rather than trying harder. Trying harder hasn’t been working.

Cooking ahead (using what I have) :money:

    coconut quinoa and red beans

    red thai wild salmon

    chilli con carne

    grilled chicken breasts

    salad box

    prepped greens for garlic greens

Hopefully this will last me a few days
    Happy Saturday everyone :)

I am having a NSD day today. I decided not to leave the house at all so I cannot spend. :money: Also I don’t want to be tempted to buy any junk food with sugar in it.

I last ate sugar yesterday at 1pm so I have now had 24 hours sugar free. :T It is so hard! I hadn’t realised how much of the damned stuff I ate. Whenever I have a craving I make a cup of tea and eat an apple and it goes away. I have also been gardening again. I did an hour or so and plan to do another hour later.

No sugar makes me feel weird emotionally maybe? Anyway, so I have made a hot water bottle and I am burning a beeswax candle to relax.

I am expecting my hoodie and track bottoms tomorrow and then the walking can begin. I am doing a charity walk next Saturday with a few people from work. We have raised £335 so far. I hope we manage £500 in the end. It will be a good way to kick start my walking.

Off to make a cup of tea and find an apple.

I hope you are all enjoying your Sundays :)

Well done for NSD - didnt quite manage that but am being generally good. Have finally managed to use debit card all month and not use CC (except for couple of planned big things 24month 0% purchase card). Not bad for a 50+ year old

Yet be careful of doing too many apples -one or two are great but a lot can just replace one type of sugar or another. At work (they care about wellbeing) I got on a programme where I had a weekly chat with a fitness and nutrition coach. He advised carrots or carrot sticks or green vegetables, even the sweeter ones.

Likewise milk/latte - I did feel I was being told not to eat anything but I could see his point so now try and stick to more veg and only one or two lattes
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

How far are you planning to walk daily ? I am now looking at trying to run again, failing that it will be fast walking .

No sugar well done, though isn't there sugar in apples ?

  • Thanks for dropping by Marks88. It sounds as if you are doing well with your money management and well done for not using the credit card for the month.:T

I am only doing sugar free of simple sugars and simple carbs so apples are fine as they are complex carbs, low sugar and contain fibre. Apples and berries are my go to, but not bingeing on them. I am however staying away from high sugar fruits like mangoes and bananas for example.

This should be enough to get me off the sugar rollercoaster (if I can stick with it ) although missing chocolate and crisps massively! I don’t want to get obsessive around food I just want to even out my highs and lows with sugar.

In the end I hope to be sugar free 90% of the time but I don’t want to be the person at the party refusing a small slice of birthday cake because I am ‘sugar free’…;)

Tomorrow I will shop for more fruits and veggies, some turkey and some eggs.

Hi Cumbria, hope you enjoyed London. I am planning on 3 miles daily to start. It isn’t far but I will build up. At the end of October I will be doing a 9/10 mile walk with the walkers group I joined. My first with them! If I like it, planning a once monthly long walk with them.

Anyone any tips on walking boots with a smidgeon of style too?

I'm going to join you in your quest to be sugar free DIA. I've got some supplements left over from when I did it previously (no clue whether they work). I do find that if I avoid starting the day with sweet stuff like fruit juice then my taste buds don't miss it so much.

I also need to cut out alcohol as that's when I tend to give in. Mind you, with nothing in the house hopefully it won't be so much of an issue.
  • Thanks Greenbee. I am making October an alcohol free month too as it is basically a simple sugar. The podcasts I've been listening to suggest different approaches for different people so reducing alcohol rather than stopping might suit some people better?

Scarpa boots are the make of mine , they cost me about £70 from Blacks . They have been well used up in the Lakes.

I would advise you have a good look round places like Decathlon, mountain warehouse etc and try boots on as they vary. I also would buy good quality walking socks . Of course all depends on how serious a walker you are going to become. If you are a size 6 I have a pair of nearly new boots you could have . Let me know .

I should be fine with no alcohol for at least the two and a half weeks of the month. I'm travelling for the second half of the month, so may well have the odd drink, but it's not usually that much. It's the regular evening glass (or two!) of wine that needs to stop.
  • Go Outdoors is worth a look for walking boots too. But in this instance fit is much more important than style. I would go into one of the pro stores and get fitted by someone trained, so that you know what brands suit you, even if you then buy them elsewhere. It really, really isn't worth buying boots that aren't right - if they hurt halfway through a walk you'll just find you'd happily pay someone many times more to swop them!
