As I understand it, some of the ! problems have come from trying to both keep up with the twentyfirst century and also fend off spanners (the accented e commonly found in fiancee was apparently the hallmark of some open gate to them).
I am resigned to seeing fiancee etc, cheerfully jump on & report spam when I happen to get to it before the rest of the MSE community does, and if I cannot use an angled apostrophe I will not fall over in a heap.

Frankly the ongoing wellbeing of MSE as a community means more to me that what punctuation is permissible but if we could have the simple old ' back that would be nice. If not, shrug, doubtless we'll learn either to paste in the correct code or to come up with something in it's place.

Oh aye, and hardcore green user. Let the new faces who like the blue & whiteness have their modern way but leave our getting towards vintage (almost OS) green, please! And next update, consider going back to green just under modern coding?

All strength to the MSE Towers team - all software updates are a trial & of course the voices of those dischuffed will be heard throughout the boards, but on the whole life without the Towers & consequently MSE would be very much less interesting.

I joined around the time they attempted to change the forum to a mobile orientated "responsive" one with a new layout (the blue) and absolutely hated it. I wouldn't have stuck around unless I could pick the great interface that is the "green" version.

I do wonder how many new signups, that stick around and make quality posts, MSE forums gets now compared to before April 2015. I would guess it's vastly dropped off. Specifically I would also speculate that the amount of people that hang around, clicking on other posts and interacting with the website, after they are finished doing what they originally came for, has collapsed under the new "blue" version.

We will never get to know the true statistics and any stats presented to us will be twisted to present whatever story they want but I bet you the blue interface is terrible at getting new quality users.

I wonder if MSE would be open and honest and tell us what %age of their users still use the green format?

I do, and wouldn't stick around long if it disappeared. I tried the blue/white and it's just not as friendly.

I speak as a multiple forum user (and bulletin boards preceding that!)

That's interesting......... the only green I've ever used (and am still on) is the latest New Masthead Fixed Width one.

I only use an iPad, though, so I don't experience the disadvantages some people have mentioned.
If I log out and want to read the forum on the new blue skin, I can't get all of each post on the screen..... the right side is often cut off.

Plus the avatars are smaller on the blue, and frequently the usernames are cut short too.
There are other things about it I don't like too, such as no quick reply button, which is great for scrolling down quickly to the bottom of the page, saving fingers!, and also there are no page numbers at the bottom of the page, meaning I have to scroll back to the top.

One feature I do like on the blue is the way you can click on 'latest post by' and get straight to the latest post. However, for me, the disadvantages outweigh that one advantage.

As for the earlier green skins, I daren't go and check them out, in case I find one I like better, only to have it disappear in a couple of weeks!

That figure could easily be skewed anyway. There's probably a shedload load of dormant accounts that got automatically moved to the blue forum in 2015 and since they are dormant have not changed back. Active users choice is what we want to know of course, but unless the figure looks good for MSE HQ in that people want to use the mobile friendly/responsive version then I doubt we will get to know.

I would bet pretty much everyone from March 2015 and before who is active is on green and that the amount of genuine active posters signing up since then has substantially decreased (spambots dont count, nor do people who asked 1 question then left!) .

As I said in a previous post, referring them to blue and green is what is causing the confusion.

I think what they mean is going is a very old version (that happens to be green)

I don't think they mean a green skin of a later version is going.

Most of the people saying they like green are probably talking about a very different version to the one that 1000 of us still use.

That exists on the "Green" (in 2 variations)

To the LEFT of the THREAD TITLE (IF there has been an update since your last visit)

there is a little square with a DOWN ARROW

Click on that and it takes you to the FIRST NEW POST (that you haven't "read")


In the NEWEST POST column ... (Date and time by WHO)

To the RIGHT of the NAME of the "WHO" there is a little square with a RIGHT ARROW


Click on that and it takes you to the LAST POST in that thread
