Hi everyone
My simpler life really started when I retired. I didn't have to get up at some ungodly hour, see people that I rather I didn't and do things that I didn't want to. Oh if it was that easy!! I must admit I do live a simpler life now and do try to live by the above but it is difficult to alter the way we think and act and Im really having to work on the way I want to live.
I took on an allotment a couple of years ago and really enjoy being there, but it has been hard work as it wasn't worked for a couple of years when I got it, but its producing all sorts now.
Im not a people person really and tend to keep myself to myself, but my dds always keep in touch daily to make sure Im OK. My friends are very few and far between and even then I don't really see them that often as both (yes only 2) live a fair way away.
I love sewing as well but Im not very good at it, but it keeps me happy. I cook from scratch mostly, and always have plenty of food in but if I had my way I think I would exist on things on toast to eat!!!!
So that's me working towards my simpler life, everybody is different.

Is it wrong not to want to tell any one once I finish work....as I just know that they'll think I can be at their beck and call, as I've "got nothing else on" ????
I've already dropped a day and managed to keep it under the radar!!
Is that selfish??How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
No sea shell, look on it as working for another boss - yourself ! Keep that day for you, the boss wouldn't want you to be neglecting her duties!!
Time to ourselves is vital and precious use it as YOU want to.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -

We have been conditioned in the last few years to 'available' at all times thanks to social media and smartphones along with, sadly, (some) peoples expectations:mad:. I switch off on a regular basis, being unavailable at times is a good thing, creates boundaries and helps prevent burn out, resentment and general grumpityness.
sea shell taking a day for you is actually the least selfish thing! Enjoy"There's a little witch in all of us"🔮🪬🧿DEBT FREE 06/2018Mrs SD’s Decluttering 2025 ⭐️ 🥇🥇🥇0 -
I've just been on holiday to Orkney, now that is definitely an escape from the modern world. It's like stepping back in time, two towns, small villages, and farmhouses dotted around the landscape. Didn't see any big name supermarkets, some Co op shops, and lots of independents. Not sure if I would like to be quite so cut off from the modern world.
There seems to be a good community spirit there, people getting together for social occasions, organized events, eating out at cafe's and restaurants, sharing produce and helping each other.
I suppose I could survive there, but it is handy to have a choice of bigger shops not too far from the village where I live. I can still choose to live a relatively simple life and embrace self sufficiency to a certain extent, without cutting myself off completely from the outside world.

All my life I've longed for Orkney or Shetland, that's my idea of life. I blame modern life and having to always work (in mainly rotten jobs that I hated) for me getting ME/CFS at 50. I think a constant load of stress burns us out - and that was before smart phones were permanetly clamped to people's lugs!0

Sea Shell, definitely not selfish!!! As far as my DD was concerned, I had two types of time - at work or available for whatever she wanted. I'm retired now and whilst I am usually ok, an autoimmune condition floors me from time to time and she's now more considerate. Enjoy your time!0

Hi Mrs Salad, my dad died a couple of weeks ago. At least he is free from pain now. X0

ASimpleHome, condolences on the loss of your dad, so sad when you lose a parent but, as you say, at least the pain is over. Take care x0

Back again, sorry have been absent due to a few days of CBA’d :rotfl:
So sorry about your dad A Simple Home but as you say he is now free from pain.
SmlSave, have you managed your serious jam making session?
Nannygladys, I thought at one stage I might like an allotment but then realised I would be too lazy to give it the attention it deservedI so admire you for putting in the hard work to make it a success :T
Sea Shell , I am in full agreement with MadamMim, Nonndiluca & wort - it is not selfish at allIn some ways DH & I are lucky that we were not blessed with children, no babysitting grandchildren etc, can go on holiday at the drop of a hat - have passport & credit card will travel :rotfl:, have no money worries as we both retired from well paid office jobs & are beholden to no-one
If we want contact with children there are plenty of nephews & nieces, great nephews & nieces, a few great great nephews & nieces & also 2nd cousins :rotfl: So please enjoy your day & when the time comes & you leave work take care of yourself. You know you will be available for emergencies but ‘NO’ is a wonderful word :rotfl:
Ilona, sounds like the best of worlds being able to choose how much interaction to have with the outside world
Mardatha I so agree that modern life has a lot to answer for - no wonder so many of us long for a Simpler Life. I have resisted & will continue to resist having a mobile phone :rotfl: but I do love my iPad :rotfl:
Anyway, now that I have withered on, I will say goodnight & ‘see’ you all in a couple of days
