Old style as an escape from the world?

I'm currently immersed in WW2 Home Front books, enjoying the proper old-fashioned feel of it that reminds me of my childhood. Like the meals of hotpot and jam rolypoly. Or the cycling down to the village for the paper. And the laying the table and lighting the fire.. It's so nice and cosy!0

My working and home life are very different. I have a corporate job with people being anxious and the self serving attitude that often now comes with that. I can mostly switch off thank goodness. I love my home and am happiest there with my beloved cats. I probably will be another 8 years from retirement but also do not want to wish my life away. It is finding a balance I think.0

Sorted out the freezer today. I tend to eat quite simple and clean. I found nothing that needed throwing out and a couple of chicken breasts I'd forgotten about. I've taken one out to have tomorrow with some steamed veg also from the freezer.
Had a relaxing(ish) day. and thankfully it did warm up a little compared to 6am this morning. I'm going to empty the kitchen bin, get into my jammies and see what I can find on tv or to read.Feb 2019 GC £151.53/£300God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, wisdom to know the difference.0 -
I love this thread!
I strive to have a calm home life. One of my (loose) resolutions for 2019 is to only do what I want to do and not overload my diary with things I am not 100% comfy with.
I have cleared out a lot of stuff from my home in anticipation of a move which didn't happen so have chosen to live with less and see how I get on!!
I have paid over £35k off debts and mortgage last year and have another hard year ahead of the same but would like to add to my cash savings a bit too. I paid cash for Christmas so want to replicate that again this year.
I need to lose some weight so have gone "old style" and cut my calorie intake whilst increasing my exercise levels!
I cook from scratch anyway and we rarely have packaged meals so have dusted off some of my old cook books for renewed inspiration.
I have upped my walking, whilst listening to a book on 4udible, this has been a great way to while away the time. I average about 45 minutes a night, putting my boots on immediately I get home and this has meant I have "read" a book or two and upped my exercise in one fell swoop!
I have "winter-proofed" my home by swotting up on the thread here - I have one cold spot which I can't do much about but have stopped the spread to the rest of the house! Having seen the weather forecast today I am glad I did! It has tried to now here this morning already.
Happy "old styling" everyone0 -
I've been reading through this thread in the last few days.
I definitely regard my home as my refuge and the place where I'm most comfortable.
In May, we will have lived in this house 30 years. From about 2009 - 2013 I was in a de-cluttering drive. The house itself wasn't too cluttered, but we tended, if we got something new, to put the old thing in the loft. Therefore, the loft was heaving with stuff. I eBayed a lot of it, which is why it took so long, but it was worth doing.
Since we stopped work, we've been decorating, modernising and upgrading, a couple rooms each year. This programme should be finished next year, so the whole house will continue to meet our requirements for many years to come
I like going on holiday and out for days - but I also love to return to my home.
I think it's much easier to say 'no' to things when you get older. We've just declined an invite to my husband's cousin's 50th Wedding Anniversary party n March, mainly because we'd have to stay overnight in a hotel, so we're passing on that one.Early retired - 18th December 2014

My home is also very much my refuge. It is the place where I feel safest, comfiest, freest and can be totally me, good, bad and ugly. It is the place where if I'm ill I have all around me I need to feel better (as long as it isn't really serious) the place where I keep my physical memories, such as photo's, items bought with my late husband and the things of his I chose to keep.
The modern world is so different to world I grew up in, some changes are most definitely for the better, others not so much. My goal is to take the modern things that will make my life easier and simplify things but to also incorporate as much OS as is possible and practicable, given my own limitations.
I plan to make my home as minimalist as possible to make keeping it clean and tidy as easy as possible. This will also mean being able to find things in drawers and cupboards easily too.
I live alone with two adorable fluffy pawed canines, they are my best friends, I also see my DD and DGD often and she is moving close by very soon so will see them even more - yippee!
Roll in simplicity and ease in 2019.Feb 2019 GC £151.53/£300God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, wisdom to know the difference.0 -
I’ve loved reading through this thread. Over the last few years my priorities have really changed, I crave the simple life, calmness and happiness.
julettet - I could have written this. Sums up everything I hate about my place of work. I enjoy my job but hate the corporate set up and the way people treat each other within it.My working and home life are very different. I wonder if I could join.? This thread definitely resonates with me.
My aim is to live as simply and frugally as possible with the odd luxury thrown in
I am about 5 yrs from retiring and work part time and always thought my work life balance was about right. But I find my time is demanded more and more by work, having to stay late due to increased demand, doing training, trying to reach deadlines, and at home with an elderly mother and MIL, and 2dds , one just setting up her own home and one at uni. I realise I have very little time of my own. So my plan is to try and ‘work smarter” and plan to have some me time.
I do enjoy cooking from scratch and living simply. We do need to declutter though as dh is a hoarder, the house looks tidy on the surface but open a cupboard door:eek: 2019 is the year we can make inroads into this0 -

I love stuff like that - I watched Home Fires and read the book it was based on. WW2 home front is a time that fascinates me! x0 -

That is the feel I want - I want to walk into the house and just feel relaxed and away from all the work / life stresses.White_musk wrote: »The modern world is so different to world I grew up in, some changes are most definitely for the better, others not so much. I like many modern conveniences but have never really felt at home in the modern word. Too fast, too loud, and just too angry for me x0
