I'm on PAYG and it works fine for me, as I tend to use my mobile hardly at all for ages and then a little bit. I also mainly use it for txt.
I think you're doing really well. I found it really hard when my kids were little - less money around and more things to spend it on (cute clothes, toys, fun days out) - mind you I was really happy-poor but happy:rotfl:

Finances can start to be sorted again from Friday when dh gets paid - he'll get a bit of back pay too from pay rise so hopefully can shift it to savings.
