It is an LCD. Thanks for comments. We now think it is about 11 yrs old. We are going to monitor it over the next few day. If we go along the replace route, where do we start? Supermarket. ? Argos? Specialist shop?
New TV? Richer Sounds. Every single time. Competitively priced (wont be beaten on price) and with a well reputed 6 year guarantee. (fixed that for you Cardinal)

New tv as mentioned. You may even be able to get a smart tv , as they have come down in price now. Try to get as many hdmi sockets as possible and to be more future proof for about the next 5 years.
Tvs and white goods are made to be disposed of after about 5 years approx. Similar to computers etc. I'd go with richer sounds or John Lewis tbh.0 -
whilst watching live tv and whilst watching a recorded program.
More than likely a faulty lead(as mentioned above) if your watching thru box or similar
test by watching live TV thru the Tv tuner

UPDATE from O/P
Couple of things. Ref the picture showing in cinemascope style for short periods. Please don't laugh. But we have narrowed it down to Emmerdale and their opening format advert (McCains). It is a transmission thing.
As for checking cables, the opportunity didn't arise yesterday but it is high on the agenda for today. Last night the picture dropped once. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I had a customer on email last night who was getting in-explainable black bars up both sides of his picture through his Plusnet(?) YouView box on our channel. He came back later very apologetic when Plusnet pointed out that it was because he'd been pressing random buttons on his remote control0 -

Oh, I suppose we two oldies could be in that category. Dare I say, we view most of our favourite programmes in the recorded state as we start viewing after our evening programmes have started. That we, if we are interrupted by telephone, skype, loo etc, we can simply pause. Then there is the changing spectacles thing, from viewing to short vision for texts. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. We have an update. Checked cables to tv and freesat box. Oddly enough, the scart did seem as though it wasn't in properly.
Put telly on during afternoon, so far so good, but screen went black about the same time as previous occasions, anytime between 6.30/6.45pm. Turned off, due to switch on again soon.
It came on but picture failed again later. It has to be the tv and not the Humax Recorder, because the programs continues to record whilst the tv is in blank mode. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
unplug recorder at wall and watch live tv using the Tv's own tuner unless its an old Analogue TV?
see my post 14 above
This will eliminate a lead problem to the recorder
