Tv picture going but sound continues.

Options
We have a Panasonic Viera TV and Panasonic recorder, both are possibly eight yrs old. During the last week whilst watching tv, the picture disappears but the sound continues normally. This has happened whilst watching live tv and whilst watching a recorded program.

The first time it happened, I can't remember what we did, but each time since, we simply go through the procedure of closing down. Then after about five minutes, start up and all is well.

So, any idea's what is happening. My wife seems to think it happens at the same time but I'm not convinced.

Oh, it's just done it again. My wife noticed the top of the screen went slightly darker then it went black, no picture ,sound on, we turned off.

Ref your comment, new to me. If you are right, what would you envisage the next step? Do we call in an enginee or buy a new tv?.

Ps, it started up, but picture in CinemaScope mode, but within seconds resumed normal screen.

At 8 years old getting an engineer would be an enormous waste of money, put it to a new TV.

If it's the backlight it would probably be fixable. But as Colin_Maybe says, it might not be economically viable.

But if it comes back on with a power cycle, then might keep on going like that for months yet.
Depends how much it annoys you.

As it's a Panasonic you haven't said whether it's an LCD or plasma TV, if it's the latter then it wont be the backlight.

Either way, at 8 years old I think you should be looking at getting a new one as a fix is not likely to be cost effective.

If I remember right some of the Viera LCDs from that time had trouble getting out of standby, though once you did get the TV on it stayed on.

Don't know if that might be related.

May be worth asking on avforums

It is an LCD. Thanks for comments. We now think it is about 11 yrs old. We are going to monitor it over the next few day. If we go along the replace route, where do we start? Supermarket. ? Argos? Specialist shop?

Good shout if it's 11 years old.

The OP will need to keep that in mind if they have equipment plugged in that is Scart only as few new TV's have Scart anymore (it was an horrible standard).

As for finding a new one just Google best TV including your required screen size or budget for 2017 or 2018. Make sure to look at multiple sites.
