  • Thank you! I shower my husband's nan every week (I do get a wee bit of money from it) and although it can be tiring (more so the thought of going back out rather than the act) she loves the contact and makes me laugh. She always wants to chat when she's taken out her hearing aid so we've had some interesting conversations!! And it led me to thinking how many more lonely old people are there who would love a bit of human contact once a week or so.

I will def look into it as it is something I would enjoy. It is also totally different from the work I do full time so I feel would be a good balance.

The debts have been really getting me down, so much so I gave myself a hard time for going £6 over budget when shopping in asda. But I suppose we all get moments like that.

    xx

  • A couple of years ago I cleaned for an old lady as an extra job. She paid me £12 per week but I think she enjoyed the company more than having her cleaning done. She would spend the whole time asking if I fancied a coffee and a sit down to chat! She had alzheimers and would repeat the same things over and over, it was quite a skill to pretend it was the first time I had heard it and sound enthusiastic! She died and I still miss her company.

    A little about me......

27 year old now single, female, cinema projectionist.. Got into trouble when I moved out of the family home to set up with the (now ex) other half.
I am now back with the parents, but finally in control of my finances. Debt around the £15k mark at the moment, but with the help of CCCS, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I know it will take me a long time to clear my debts, but I have something to aim for and will not stop.
I now keep a money diary to help me track what I spend. I do not drink or smoke, and I think about how long it took me to earn my money before I spend it. Those bargain £35 shoes are not quite so nice when you realise it took 6 hours at work to pay for them!:rotfl:
Lightbulb moment: August 2007. Debts totalling £15,634.
    Debt as of 19th July 2012 - £6,426.
Estimated Debtfree Date: December 2017, but aiming for a lot sooner!

  • Nice to meet you Mandoo, the pondering to think how long you have to work for items certainly works!

  • Yes I think I might try that one. And having thought about my £6 over budget will try and reduce the next 3 weeks worth of shopping and pay the excess back into my account. (I took the cash out but ended up paying by switch as i didn't have enough in my purse. used the actual cash to get dog food.)

don't feel as motivated as i did a small while ago!
I have just reread this - I seem so muddled!!

My mum got me a similar job when I was a teen. I feel bad now because she was really nice and again wanted to chat repeating the same stories but although I tried I just wanted to clean and go :o .

Thought about a second job but it would go down like a lead ballon with other half. I already work a full week, anymore and he would say Im not around the kids enough or helping him out with them (hes main carer).

I can still hopefully reduce my debt without it :j so not the end of the world but its so much slower than you lot!

  • I feel bad sometimes as I am as single mum and don't feel I am there enough to support my son.

He is a really good lad.. not one of these that hangs around in gangs causing trouble. But sometimes his tea is a rush job as I am dashing out to do extra work and I am not around to help him with homework and make sure he is revising. subsequently he has not done that well in his mocks :o

His dad doesn't bother with him and hasn't seen him since last summer as he is too busy with his new family . It is all quite a juggling act and I feel his childhood is whizzing by and I am always working to keep a roof over our head.

I find shopping on line really helps to keep within budget, I know you pay a delivery charge but I have usually managed to find a discount code on this site or on the internet which cancels out the delivery charge. At least you can see the running total in your basket and adjust it as necessary. I always overspend when I physically go shopping and then berate myself all the way home!

  • I know Im lucky really OH can be a right pain but I dont have to raise the kids alone. I do feel bad sometimes being a full time working Mum but its better for one of us to earn and they still have a dad at home.

They think the world of him, Mum has an easy life at work!

  • Thats great news squirrel! Thanks for tellin us about you donna & mandoo. The second job is a toughie...I have to have permission for any additional work that I do because of my grade which makes working elsewhere nigh on impossible, although I do occasional babysitting. At the start I went all guns for it, sold loads on ebay etc but then had a blip as in hindsight, I overdid it (thus setting up longhaulers!).
My philosphy, rightly or wrongly, is that I would rather get there later by having the occasional treat than be exhausted and close to a breakdown...plus things like breaking boilers, car etc get in the way!
I've done my budgets for the month & managed to pa £800+ off which is great. When petplan pay the money they owe me it will go down another 100 or so & I'll see if I can get to 1000!! I realised that this made me almost even from last month & was hacked off untl i realised that there was Christmas, boiler & car tax (which I put on my cc as I get cashback!) so actually not bad - boiler on its own was 500!! Just feels frustrating when you see the total go the wrong way though eh!! Plus sorted al my bills, flat is tidy & I have a ice day out today! Taking my first ever merangue so nterested to see what it tastes lile - cant belive how easy it was to make. Have been terrfied of them for years & dont know why now - only took 10 mins!!
