Thanks for adding me 'in search of me'.

I got into debt by thinking that credit cards were free money for buying stuff. We bought a house that needed a fair amont of work.

We did that work and used interest free credit from b&q (£5000). Then whilst saving to pay that off we bought furniture, big TV, carpets etc on the credit cards.

Then a car and before we knew it we had a lovely decorated house, with lots of nice things, some gucci gadgets, a nice car, a bank loan, 4 credit cards, £200 pcm interest to pay on credit cards and a total of about £26k debt. I was buying all the groceries etc on credit cards and never had enough left over to pay them off at the end of the month.

I feel just plain stupid now. To look at us you would think we have it all. Nope the banks have it all we are just borrowing this stuff till we have paid for it. It was the backward attitude of have it now pay later.
  • Hi kdenty :) dont worry we have all been on the gravy train :) buy now pay later lark but we are all on the big learning curve ive removed my outstanding numbers because i dont want to look at what i owe its coming down and thats all that matters really isnt it :) its always nice to tott the numbers up every few months :D xx

    Just joined as 274 :)
We have £21k of debt and are looking at 8 years to pay it off at the moment.
How did we get it? Overspending, me giving up work for my health and my OH losing a job and the next one paying £10k a year less.
This is our first serious month on our debt free journey and I've started a diary on here to help.

Of course I may inherit millions next week and it'll be a short stay here:rotfl:

    Hello everyone :D

    Hello everyone,

I had my LBM last summer when my bank asked me very politely if I'd mind paying back my massive overdraft :o I'd been ignoring my problem until then. It's the usual story, in my head credit cards + bank loans = free money but of course I now know better largely thanks to you guys.

I'll be debt free in about 8 years if I carry on going at the current rate so I'm here for the long haul too. I've been lurking for over a year now so I thought it was about time to say 'hello' :)

    Hi All

Just wanted to jump aboard, how do I go about getting a snazzy number?!

Last week I took the bull by the horns and sorted out my debt by going to my bank and meeting up with a super helpful lady who didn't judge me and simply helped me sort my life out!

I'd wanted to get a loan for a while to pay off all my random debts and credit cards so I had one easy payment to make a month but as I had so much debt my credit rating was ridiculously poor and nowhere on earth would give me a shiny loan to help me out.

I was so scared to take my little/mahoosive bit of paper into the bank with me detailing all my debt, APRs etc etc and my little budget plan i'd made so I knew what moneys I had to spend on what.

The only thing I can say is I wish i'd done it sooner, not only would I have been paying less interest each month, I am now saving nearly £200 a month off the debt that I would have been paying and i'm actually going to be seeing the debt reduce significantly each month rather than just pennies going on interest. My mind is way more at ease and i'm much happier knowing my debt is being dealt with and will now only get smaller!!

The only downside is i'm now a long haul loaner type but i'm hoping you'll all make me feel welcome over the next 5 years!
