kitten & Xmas tree!!

I know it's still early but is there anyway of stopping my kitten climbing the christmas tree????

Incase anyone was wondering, I haven't put the tree up just yet! I've got a beautiful 7ft tree and don't fancy the idea of my kitten hanging of the of it and scratching the fairy to pieces!!

Would putting bits of orange peel around the bottom and places in the branches stop her?

Thanks!

  • I rubbed some olbas oil round the bottom of my tree and when I went out stood things in front of it that they didn't like ie the hoover and a can of flea spray. Also if you have any tree decorations like a bell or something that makes a noise, 1) it might put them off or 2) gives you a warning they are half way up the tree.

Aged 10 my 2 have almost given up with the tree......

  • I've just rung my friend (who has 5 cats - 3 of which are kittens) and he suggested electric barbed wire!! I'm hoping he's joking otherwise its a phone call to the RSPCA methinks!!! :rotfl:

Push cloves into oranges and place the at the bottom of the tree - cats don't like the citrus smell and its very christmassy too!

My little cat loves bashing the baubles hanging low down but never tried to climb up. There is no food up there after all.

Thinks hmm that never stopped her climbing the curtains.

Ok ignore me but cats like christmas too....

  • My 2 practically live up the tree from the second i put it up, it hasn't affected my artificial tree just yet, it has so far survived 2 years of cat abuse, but they are getting a little heavier so gonna try the orange tip before they ruin it!

  • I never found a solution to this when my cats were kittens they, stripped the tree bare in two days,I even found some of the decorations in the garden. They had carried them through the cat flap. One of the kittens even started to chew the branches at the bottom of the tree.
When they were older and in their teens they used to sit and look at the bottom of the tree trying to look innocent and the moment I looked away you'd hear a twang and a bauble would fly across the room, them following like kittens again.Cats love christmas trees and the shinier the baubles the more they go for them for some reason.
  • As the title says how can I stop my 18 month old cat climbing my xmas tree?! She pulled it over 3 times already and it's driving me mad:mad: !

I've squirted her with water if she goes near it which she hates but she's knocking it over while I'm not in the room. At the moment she's being shut in the kitchen at night and when I'm out but she hates this.

Is there anything I can spray on it or that I can put on the tree (electric barb wire maybe!!:rotfl: ) that will act as a deterrant?!

    Thanks in advance

Sorry to say it but since the dawn of time cats have climbed trees... giving her a perfect climbing frame will be her dream come true and you're not likely to convince her otherwise... Either secure the tree somehow so it won't fall over and get non-breakable baubles etc or give up on trees :)
When mine were younger I had a christmastree with no decorations and tied to a hook in the ceiling (shhh don't tell my old landlord ;) ) and frankly the cats provided me with more laughs in that blooming tree than any amount of decorations would have... :) At 8/9 they're still eyeing up tree's if I have them, but one is too lazy now and the other too easily spooked - we MIGHT try to have a normal christmas tree this year... But we might have a tiny one again just because it's easier ;)

My current kitties seem quite happy to leave well enough alone, but in the past I have also had to tie the tree to a screw in the wall ..... My tree only looked nice for about 2hrs until they climbed it, and started pulling baubles off, and I started removing tinsel and ribbons for fear of linear foreign bodies :rotfl:

Seriously, I have no idea how other people manage, apart from minimal deccies, and tying it to the wall?
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
