So sorry to hear your news Karmacat. I didn't know your brother in law was ill - was it unexpected? Serious life events certainly do alter your perspective and money is the least important thing in the world compared with health and family.

Thanks Seaxwyn. It was completely unexpected, yes, apparently it was a rare complication of high blood pressure. Honestly, if anything was going to make you look after yourself health wise, this would. It all happened unbelievably fast, but drawn out slow too, like in a nightmare.

Just catching up after my holiday - so sorry to read your news. Life is pants at times, but we have to take those pants times to remind us of the fact that what we have isn't that bad after all. If everything went well all the time, how would we be able to know when things were going particularly well, or to give ourselves a well deserved pat on the back for making the best of a bad job, or for doing something to make someone proud.....

I don't think any of that came out as well as I wanted it to - but I think you get the gist of what I am saying......life seems bleak for a few days, and will wash in and out of bleakness, but there will be shiny chinks of light appearing in between......take those chinks and run with them as they appear.

    xx

Thanks hypno. As we've often said when someone dies, it brings everything into perspective. But I'm only just getting over the immediate shock, I have to say. This is someone I've known for 31 years. Its a long time, and the funeral isn't till this Friday coming. But I know the sun is still shining.

Thanks, Squirrel. It was all very, very fast, very confusing, and its made me think about how precious our time is as nothing else could have done.

And RIP Jack Jones too - I voted for him to be president of London University Convocation, a million years ago (the other candidates were Princess Anne, and some bloke in prison in South Africa called Nelson Mandela - thats how long ago *that* was). A few years after that, I met Jack Jones briefly - to get the obligatory trade union permission for the schemes for therapeutic horseriding for people with mental handicap that I organised back in the 1980s. He went peacefully in his sleep at the age of 96.... not bad, not bad at all. He was a good man too.

Hi Tea - thanks for posting. I'm okay, not brill.... my sister is managing on fumes at the moment, and retreating into "organisational" mode for some things, tho she is managing to talk about it all. She went to the funeral director's this morning, and she's got cleaners in at the mo so she doesn't have to think about it.

Well, it came and went, very intense of course. The love that was shown was amazing, thats the strongest impression. My mum is staying with my sister for as long as need be.

And I've decided to shut down the diary, and reduce my presence on mse. I'm adding a private email address to my profile so I'm not incommunicado.

Thank you all for the support, and the opportunities to express support; I will be on now and again, and I'll definitely add my name to the Debt Free Roll of Honour when I get there!

  • Sorry to hear about your presence on here, will miss your little updates and love of Michael Shanks.

On a personal note, glad it all went well and that you are all ok as such. Take care. x
