dunno the details here, really don't. When I was a teenager on wildlife projects, we used scythes.... not sure you can get them nowadays :o

These days, a teenager with a scythe would send the entire town on Brown Alert and have ASBOs applied to every part of the body...

That said, if you want to just cut the stuff and keep the area useable, a rotary mower is fine. If you want stripes, an official "lawn", then you have to have a roller. If you have long grass in particular, you have to have a mower that will raise up pretty high - you can't go straight it and cut it to the level you want to end up with, it doesn't work that way. You might cut it to three or four inches? dunno the details here, really don't. When I was a teenager on wildlife projects, we used scythes.... not sure you can get them nowadays :o

Yes you can still get scythes on t'internet! Dr Dragon got a Scythette (mini scythe!) as our garden is a postage stamp!

I forgot about that! :rotfl: Still, Dragon said you can get 'em on tinternet.

I sat in the garden drinking my coffee admiring all the greenery, its lovely out. I'm just about to go out again - to the top part this time, make sure it doesn't get overrun again this year. I saw my rhubarb! Its still growing, so I'm going to pull the ivy up around it. Its partner died a few years ago when I accidentally dug it up

Happy little camper here. Next door's cat is sunbathing on next door's neighbour, I just got rid of a whole box of unwanted packaging and managed to clear some space in my 2nd bedroom, all is well with the world.

Doesn't take much, does it ....

    Mornin
Just discovered the lawnmower-which wasn't very good anyway has died so off to buy a new one tomorrow. Not very MSE except that once I can SEE the garden I'l hopefully be motivated to plant fruit & veg.
Now kc as you're a garden guru :) am I right in looking for a rotory mower (seem to be offers around £60) for 100 foot flat garden with lots of long grass ??

Hiya sounds like the sun has been shining and everyones been busy

Duchy - IMOH Rotary mower - for that amount of grass on a flat garden maybe best - especially if it collects the grass too - if its really long though you might want to strim first (rake if you can be bothered) then gently go over it with a mower on highest setting - but don't listen to me I am not a fan of grass.

We picked both our wee mowers ones on freecycle - might be worth an ad? Then see what you get offered, tis amazing how much a 'free' mower suddenly becomes the one you need!!! I orefer electric to petrol and rotary to flymo's - but am tiny and find starting up petrol mowers really hard, and I am too scared that I will one day flymo off my foot. Although flymos good if you have a slope or if your ground is a bit wet or prone to be soggy.

KK well done on lots of outside work today - waves to the rest of you - sorry if I hijacked things with my garden babble - radar pricks up and my mouth engages sorry :D
I could do with a couple sheep here, our rhubarb is showing too - I just shoved a big bucket over mine to force up some quick growth and get a crumble quicker - my granpa always use to do it - the heat and dark makes it grow lovely pink stems super quick. (like you see on the shelves in supermarket soon with the wrinkled tiny leaves)
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:
    minus 112.06 = £7755.32:money:
    :money:Sleeves up folks.:money:

Hi KP, I've had a great day, thanks, I've really enjoyed it. I also found time to summarise some genealogy research, the Irish/French connection of the early twentieth century. Fascinating stuff.

Hi Bob - yep, I got rid of the dog poo, and Shaun left his sheep all over my back garden :rotfl: still, its Shaun, I wouldn't complain about him, would I :A:A

Fay - I was hoping you'd step in on the gardening for Duchy! A strimmer, of course, is the modern equivalent of the scythe.

I started on the next stage of the garden - the part that my nephew worked on last year, to create a place to sit in the shade - there's nowhere else for high summer. And I've started this about three times already. So this time, I did a little area about 4 foot by two as usual, but THEN I put the membrane straight down - I'll have to pick it up each time I dig some more, of course, but its just roughly held down with those bricks at the mo, so thats no problem. I really want that bit done and dusted, and I think this time it might actually happen!:j
