It it is a top 100 employer I would be amazed if there isn't something in your contract of employment that lets them do this.

As it is you have to ask yourself what you hope the outcome will be here?

It won't be looked upon well by your employer if you report them for a breach of DPA to the information commissioner. You should report this internally as a grievance formally through HR.
  • You’re a manager as well though, according to other posts (you also don’t mind breaching the DPA when moseying on other people’s computers.)

If you’re a manager you had a responsibility as well.

    1. To uphold the DPA and voice your concerns.

    2. Not to negate your complaints by sh**ging the person you are complaining is texting you!

I work somewhere else now so this is not relevant.

How have I breached the DPA when moseying on other people’s computers?

Releasing personal information without the permission of the person involved probably does breach DPA. This isn't a case of the Staff Directory being on show, a staff directory would show their contact number at work which is unlikely to be a private mobile phone.
The OPs grievance is greatly undermined by their actions. If the texts received had simply been reported to management, and no action taken by management to address the issue they would potentially have a strong case for harassment.
Given the full situation I think it could actually be detrimental to the OP to try to take this further.

Then you have less than 2 years service so I'd suggest playing this carefully...

Ask for your number to be removed. I'm assuming the rest of the staff are able to use this phone list as intended without all falling into one mad orgy at the sight of it?

Youre all upset about this data protection breach but you were more than happy to nosey on other peoples computers whilst they were logged on. One rule for one...

I mean unless you were looking for new potential suitors then actually you haven't done anything wrong at all.

I think Marlie may be referring to when you looked at your managers computer when he left it logged on.

    Now I got it thanks.
  • I don't understand how (or why) an employer would display employees' private 'phone numbers? What would be the benefit to the company of doing that?

I have my colleagues and managers private number in case I need to contact them out of hours, for example if I am meeting them at a location and I am late or have an issue.

There are a few reasons for people to need to contact colleagues out of hours, but very few companies seem to provide work mobiles now.
