Road test ... no tax. Help please.

Options
I want to buy a second hand car.
The car I have in mind has been SORNed.

As it isn’t road taxed ... how can I take it for a test drive?
Is there a provision for this in the law?

Thanks.

You cannot legally take a car which has been SORNed on to a public road unless it is being driven to an approved MOT station for a pre-booked MOT
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

There's also the more contentious issue of insurance. Getting caught driving without it can be a very expensive error...

Unlikely to get caught but who would be responsible, the owner/keeper or the driver?

    Yes.

The seller taxes the car so that he can pursuade a buyer that it is roadworthy on a road test.

    Hmm... that’s what I thought.
It’s a private seller so no trade plates.
And I don’t think he’s interested in getting it taxed.
And I think my fully comp car insurance could cover me driving another wouldn’t it?

Also... I need some tips on haggling!!!

possibly , but in a case of a lot of insurance companies ONLY if the other vehicle is insured

you could insure a 30 yr old austin and then buy a 2018 Lamborghini , weould that be ok?

You will likely find that your fully comp cover will cover you to drive other cars that are not owned by you and that are insured. It won't be insured if it's not taxed, so no cover under your policy.

I wouldn't be buying a car that's SORN. You don't know how long its been sat for unused.
