Awww, glad your dog has perked up. I don't know anything about dogs, being very much a cat girl.....but I definitely know about vets bills & the horrible worry about poorly pets. I wonder if it's a bad back from age, or she's pulled a muscle. So glad to hear the painkillers are working. I have pet insurance now, but when I adopted my 1st rescue cat, I didn't bother. He was a big tough lad, looked hail & hearty.......famous last words......before that 1st year was up, he'd cost me just short of £1000. I insured him after that, but of course because I'd delayed for a year, that meant I couldn't get him covered for any gastric conditions because of a surgery he'd needed when I'd only had him 4 months.
I think cats are perhaps cheaper to insure than dogs? I pay about £16 per month to insure my current cat, but it does increase a bit every year to reflect his increasing age. I'd have to be absolutely on my uppers to contemplate life without a mog but if it had to happen, I think I'd see if I could foster for the local Rescue or CPL or look into volunteering there. I know they sometimes need people to go in & help socialise kittens & semi-ferals prior to rehoming.
Oh....& I forgot to say......I too LIKE your chicken stories! I'd like chickens myself but don't really have anyone I could ask to tend them when we go away, so I have put my chicken-owning plans on the back burner for now. Maybe when we next move house......... (chickenny smile!)

SO glad Betty is alright OBL. The only trouble with new insurance is anything that your pet's been treated for at the vets is not covered by it.... they win all ends up don't they!

And I also love your chicken stories... keep them coming :)

We have a cat too but he is really my DDs so she pays for all his bits,I got cover for Betty for £13.51 a month for a lifetime plan,I hate looking for insurance because I don't trust them to pay out,DD paid out nearly £1000 for the cat earlier in the year but was able to claim a lot of it back on her insurance
There is a scheme called Borrow My Doggy where you can sign up to help look after other people's dogs as a volunteer thing,I might join that if I become dogless at any point ,I'm also considering dog walking as an alternative income for when I retire,it would be a good way to make sure I exercise and get out of the house plus the extra money would be good, pet sitting is another idea I had for when I retire and want to boost my pension

There are lots of loud fireworks going off here tonight so I'm hoping my chickens aren't too upset about the noise

Today me and DD went to check out Mr M, I was impressed with the fruit and veg section and they had a good free from range but the vegetarian range wasn't as good as it used to be,DD went to get vegan Quorn chicken pieces but sadly they had sold out
We did however get some bits for Xmas just the choccys that we like and some vegan chocolate for DD,we are paring back Xmas this year as i always get carried away and buy too much,I will have to edit this post later with the cost of the shopping because although I remembered to get a receipt it's in my bag upstairs and I'm nice and comfy on the sofa
Some of the bits I normally buy in Mr S were actually dearer in Mr M which I was surprised at but for most things it's definitely cheaper and the quality of the fruit and veg was much better
Im pleased I've made a start on the Xmas food, I was getting a bit worried about how much it was going to cost but I think this year is going to be significantly cheaper than last year

This afternoon I did the ironing and cleaned out the chickens,I gave them a treat today do layers pellets mixed with hot water to make a mash and I stired some crushed up mealworms into it,they loved it,I like to give them some warm mash in the winter and it means they go to bed with full crops, they are fussy ladies and never eat enough pellets because they have been spoilt with treats, this way they get some worms but have to eat the mash to get them

Betty is looking so much better today she is back to her waggy tailed self,Im so pleased, I hate to see her looking sad

I've got work tomorrow so I'm going to try to get to bed at a decent hour tonight

  • Just updating today's food shopping
    Mr M = £27.92
I'm splitting it up though because some of it is Xmas food so
    £5.60 on Xmas treats
    £22.32 on normal shopping
I bought 3 Cartons of Alrpro longlife soya milk because it was on offer,so this should last me about three weeks that was £3 for the three, this would have cost me £4.20 in MrS so a nice saving there

  • Just a quick update before I got to my mums for a haircut
I got up nice and early this morning because it's Nanny daycare day today,DGS is a lot better than he was but is still very tired,I don't think he is sleeping well at night,I gave him breakfast and he then went for a nap and he is still alssep now nearly two hours later,I'm hoping he will wake up a bit more cheerful than he was when he arrived
While DGS has been asleep I have managed to clean and tidy the kitchen, polish and hoover downstairs and put on a load of washing,I've got to go out shortly so will do upstairs when he has gone home later
Right I must go and get myself ready,I will be back

Good news about Betty. :) Nice to hear about the chickens, too: it's a comforting thought that they gt a hot supper!

One word of warning re Mr M's baked goods - which must apply to other shops with the same practice, i.e. setting them out without wrappers - I've seen a customer pick up an item with her bare hands, inspect it and put it back! Needless to say I don't buy their loose baked goods any more. Potentially one of the easiest ways to get ecoli, especially as there are public toilets in the entrance to that particular shop. A member of our family used to work in a different Mr M's though and I always liked to go there for flowers for Mum, so there are good memories too.

  • Thanks Cherry, she is almost back to normal now,I'm going to give her the weeks course of painkillers/ anti inflamatories and then see how she goes, hopefully it was just a temporary problem

Re the baked goods,I've seen so many people pick up and put back pastries in different shops, anotheronenis pick and mix sweets,I watched a small child lick the little scoop all over until her mum took it off her and just put it back in the sweets:eek:I haven't bought loose sweets since

My chickens are truely pampered but I think they deserve it for providing me with two daily eggs nearly all year round
