My journey to a debt free life

I bought a cat bed with 'sides', as they do like to lean on them & I always think there is less of a draught. I bought it from the pet stall on the market for £18 which I thought was quite expensive but it has lasted years. It is still in good nick & the removable cover washes well. I add a blanket in the coldest months for extra snuggliness..... Not that he's spoiled rotten or anything.....

We used to have a really good pet stall here but sadly it's not there anymore,we don't have a market which is really sad,it's been gone for years now
I still haven't found one I like yet,it needs to be machine washable in case the cat throws up on it :rotfl:he has a tendency to do this from time to time and he will expect to share the bed with the dog:rotfl:Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,510 Owed = £11,1201 -
Hi everyone, just popped in to do an update and a confession
It appears I am not immune to making impulse decisions even though I've been here a year and have learned soooo much, and I do know better but sadly my heart ruled my head in this situation, this is also quite a funny and embarrassing story but typical of the situations I get myself into sometimes
So on Thursday I ended up in town with DD to do some shopping,we had to go to the pet shop to buy sawdust and other supplies, she disappeared upstairs to look at the hamster bedding while I looked at the dog food, she was gone for ages so I went up looking for her,she couldn't find what she was looking for but had wandered into the area where they keep the hamsters for sale .........can you see where this is going yet......
I found her looking at this sad little hamster trundling round in his too small wheel in his too small tank with a label that said £5 on my own.......we both instantly felt sad for this little guy all on his own.......but we walked away and decided to stay strong and not buy him,we carried on round the shop trying to find this bedding and eventually we found it on the floor under his cage,so we ended up back looking at him again
I said to DD I can't leave this shop knowing he is in there all on his own with nothing to do but try to trundle round and that too small spinner so I decided to buy him just because I felt sorry for him:eek:
Anyway we called the shop assistant over and he said he thought there was another one in there too, well he lifted the lid off the house and about 5 hamsters came out,so we didn't need to buy him at this point because he wasn't on his own but I felt so embarrassed for telling the assistant that we wanted him I just bought him anyway:eek:
At this point I must say I have owned hamsters before and we did already have a cage and all the bits to look after him properly but did I need a hamster........erm no.......and did he need rescuing.......erm no......:rotfl:
The tank he was in was way too small especially as there were several others in there too and he was reduced because he isn't a baby and at 19 weeks old was being passed over for the younger ones and I let my heart rule my head,I am no longer allowed to go upstairs in that pet shop:rotfl:
So I am now the proud owner of a Russian Dwarf Hamster who I have called Eric,I've named him Eric after my favourite vampire from the series True Blood becasue he bites me every time he gets the opportunity to do so.......so he's not even a grateful hamster:rotfl:
I must also say this could have been sooooo much worse because there were also two Guinea pigs for sale with their cage for £100, they had been returned to the shop and needed rehoming together, one of them had cataracts as well, but this shop has a policy that if you buy a pet and it gets ill and you don't want it you can return it,so I presume the owners had brought them back,I absolutely love guinea pigs as I used to keep them too years ago,so my purse could have been lighter by £100 and not just £5
I do hope someone rehomes them though as they were both lovely looking and looked in really good health apart from the cataracts
So that's my confession now the update
Work was busy yesterday but I was also on a study day for most of the day, part of it was a talk on sudden infant death which I found quite difficult to listen to,the lady doing the talk was sooo lovely though and clearly had a passion for making this awful experience as easy for the parents as possible,it was quite uplifting to listen to her really
It's DD 2s birthday on Tuesday and I have bought her a book and she has some pictures she wants frames for,she was also going to buy a pin board from Ikea to put behind her new desk so I suggested I get it for her as part of her birthday presents, she only wanted things that would be useful and that she actually needed so this was ideal as she was going to buy it anyway and it will be very useful
Its a modular one that you can attach brackets ,shelves and pots to ,we had a look round while we were there and a coffee,we also nipped over to Mr T for some food shopping and Pets at Home to look at dog beds,I still can't decide which bed to get so I'm thinking about it for a bit longer,I'm pleased to report that I did not leave the store with any small furry animals
When we got home I was feeling a bit agitated for some reason ,the house was messy and I was cold and hungry so that didn't help, this was solved by eating a peanut butter sandwhich and then I went mad and cleaned everywhere, the house looks lovely again now though and I had a nice relaxing evening reading
I do find that if I'm feeling stressed out cleaning the house seems to help and it benefits the house too:)Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,510 Owed = £11,1201 -
I'm glad you bought the hamster... you would have been lying awake worrying about him if you hadn't. :rotfl:I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I'm also glad you rescued the non needing rescuing hamster too....
That story has made my Sunday. I have sat here laughing my head off at the fact that 5 popped out, but £5 for a hamster is a bargain. Even if it is ungrateful.
I have walked away from pet shops many times, and I am also banned from going anywhere near live animals for sale. I always want to buy them too. xSeptember 2017 Debt = £25330
Starting afresh.

The heroic tale of rescuing Eric has to be the most wholesome and heartwarming confession I've read on here
I've an impulse pet too - my cat was the runt of the litter, and came home in a cardboard box
Hope he starts showing some gratitude soon

He is my second impulse pet,our dog came to us becasue a colleague had to rehome her,so I offered to take her in,I have always owned dogs but had no plans to have another after losing my last one,but she came to live with us anyway, the fast few months were awful and I wondered what the hell I had done but 4 years later she is still here so it must have been the right decision
So you see I have previous :rotfl:
Well done on taking in your cat too, like you I'm a sucker for the underdog :rotfl:Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,510 Owed = £11,1201 -
Arrrggghhhh I've woken up with an awful headache,I probably shouldn't be on here but I'm chilling out before braving taking the dog out in the rain,I took some codeine last night because I was in quite a lot of pain so that is probably the reason,I don't think I'm going to be able to take it anymore because even one dose seems to trigger a headache now
Today's plans were supposed to be to take the dog to the beach but it's chucking it down so that's not happening now, I do need some bits from the pet shop that I couldn't find before :eek:but that could wait until Tuesday
I also have the ironing to do but obviously i don't want to do that :rotfl: and I have some dollhouse furniture to finish painting which sounds like a lot more fun to me:j
I could also do some more bits to the bathroom but it will make a mess and I have cleaned the house so I'm not sure I want to do that
I think the compromise is the ironing first then furniture painting
The Further Adventures of Eric include me getting up at 6 am because I heard a loud noise from his cage and thought the water bottle had fallen off but it hadn't,he was just trying to get the water out but it was too low,so I had to get up and move it,his cage is in my room because the cat will stop at nothing to eat this furry morselOriginal Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,510 Owed = £11,1201 -
Your story about Eric is sweet and hilarious all at the same time :rotfl:. I hope he settles in well to his new home and doesn't keep waking you up. Eric is a very lucky hamster to have such a lovely new owner
.
I hope you enjoy painting your dolls house furniture today (and the ironing ).Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally
