  • Congratulations on completing the 30DC Shaggy!

14/25 and 3/5 for me today.

Saw an advert yesterday for Fentimans rose lemonade - considering investing in some fancy schmancy AF drinks for the festive season so I don't feel deprived. I tried that Seedlip AF gin which is lovely but expensive. Any other suggestions?

Morning all, 11/21 for me today thanks :)

I did have a drink with my friend at lunch yesterday (which I enjoyed), then when I got home I had a little more, I would have said not much, but have woken up this morning feeling a bit odd, not with a headache or anything but not quite right, so the evening effort didn't really agree with me. Also, thinking about it I realised I've almost lost interest in drinking at home - it's because of the AFDs, I'm sure, it's kind of built up over time. I still enjoy drinking socially but not on my own especially any more. So that's useful to know.

That's how I feel after drinking these days - hence the abstinence - I have wondered if it's an age thing

OH has cut down hugely, gradually, since I gave up. He's 71 and nothing stops him going on a bender when he's in the mood. It's very rare now, and could be three or four times a week when I drank. He did so on Saturday and was a bit grot on Sunday and napped on Monday afternoon, but other than that, it's situation normal for him, but he's someone that doesn't 'do' ill.

I thought it might be an age thing initially too, but I've since decided it's about how frequently and how much we drink. Once you cut down beyond a certain level, typically a glass or two every evening, and go fairly consistently without booze for a week or 10 days, and do that regularly, I now believe that tolerance starts to be affected quite markedly - unless and until we start drinking regularly again, even if it's only small amounts.

So, what I'm saying is, if you used to drink more than you think you should have, and you cut down drastically either quickly or gradually, if you then go back to wanting to drink regularly, intially at least, your reaction is quite likely to be quite strong to a fairly small amount. And by small amount, I'm talking one or two drinks at most over an evening.

That sounds very convoluted, but it should make some sense to this interested!

Having watched OH and a friend kill three bottles of red wine followed by a fair amount of whisky and stay up until at least 3.30 am, all I can say is I never realised just how unnecessary booze was to me until Saturday evening. I bailed out at 12.30 or so, and admittedly the reason I slept really, really badly the following night was because the dog had to be walked twice in the early hours, meant that I felt like death warmed up on Monday and Tuesday. Two nights of rotten sleep and not being able to function - That's Age!

    14/30 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.

I know my tolerance has dropped considerably since having AF days. That's how I found my stop button.:D

I seem to have reached my minimum target much more quickly this month. It's because of the AF Fridays. I'm not making a long term commitment to them but I'm pleased with the two I've managed so far. The hardest part is killing the anticipation during the late afternoon but once I'm past wine o'clock and had my dinner I'm fine. What I enjoy most is the early evening drinking, while I'm cooking. Is that unusual?

10/10 AFDs please Shaggy and 3/3 for the SNC.
