Ah, what a shame. As you say, sometimes there's an internal candidate already acting into the post. It does leave you free for the other post, though.
I hope you've de-toilet-papered the house successfully. The kitten must have thought it was Christmas.
I'm with you on the pearly barley - it's probably okay. You would know if it smelt off or was mouldy. You've reminded me I have yellow spilt peas that could be a similar vintage: I must do something with them!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I seem to remember you had other things on your mind just before the interview, so perhaps it's not entirely surprising and also you can never tell how good the other candidate was. Better luck next time!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Sorry to hear about the interview but it sounds as if you know what you can do to perform better next time. Interviews are just horrid and I'm not sure they are even effective at selecting the best candidate - I seem to meet a lot of people at work who interview well but actually doing the job role, not a chance!5

Thank you all for your kind comments. I wasn't planning on applying for jobs on promotion just yet as I didn't feel ready, but these two particular ones came up that ticked the boxes and it seemed daft not to at least throw my hat in the ring. I wasn't really prepared and didn't expect to get through to interview let alone get the job. I hate being interviewed, there is no way of knowing what they'll ask and I always forget what I want to say when I'm under pressure. I enjoy the role I'm in now, there's no pressure, I can work at my own pace as long as I get done what I have to do so it wouldn't be the end of the world to stay in it until I retire, plus I get a decent pay rise in June. However there's no harm in trying to go up a grade if the chance arises.
On the finances front, I had another overspend on groceries last week, nothing dire at just under £10, but I'd much rather have an underspend. I've adjusted the next two weeks grocery budgets accordingly so am determined to spend less. I sent an oddment over to the Christmas pot so this now holds £83.84.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)5 -

Interviews and exams have their similarities: getting through them is a skill in itself and, as @maggiem points out, they get the people who are good at interviews but not necessarily the best people for the job.
Interesting that you didn't feel you were ready for it... perhaps in a year or so you will feel differently and that would be the perfect time to try again. However, it could be that all you needed was to get your head into gear with a bit of practice, and at the next interview you'll be ready for them.
I noticed how prices are going up, have you factored in an increase? Now you have the kitten too, so if you include pet food in the grocery bill, you could have a third extra in pet costs. I don't know if you can justify vast amounts of toilet paper as kitten feed though!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Sorry to hear about the job, @Sun_Addict. I have both shortlisted/interviewed people....... & been interviewed myself under the same system, & I know which I prefer. Even knowing 100% how the system works, it's still so easy to forget key things under pressure..... or in my case, side-step a difficult question by answering the one I wished they'd asked me instead!
