It was certainly more arduous than I expected, but I didn’t have to memorise anything. I just scrolled back and fore between the text and the data. Although I never want to read anything about ice hockey ever again.

That's what I did too (scrolled back and forth), which was why it took so long. Did you get to 19 in the 46 minutes average completion time, or did it take you the maximum allowed completion time of 1 hour 40 mins?

No, I was definitely over  the 40 minutes but there was still enough time left that I hadn’t  started to panic. I think I was probably somewhere round about an hour and a quarter.

The researcher  give me an extra 99p because of the extra time that it took over and above what they suggested.
if you’re in that situation again, it might be worth messaging them before you close it, or just hitting submit anyway and sending an explanatory message. The researcher replied straight away to tell me to see if I could still submit it without completing and it did give me a completion code.

That's great you were paid 99p extra for your time. I was working on the weather forecast examples when I decided I wasn't going to finish in time. That was worse than the phone examples I started with. I don't know if you had the weather forecast but it took even longer, as you had to hover over loads of icons to get the data each time.

Yes, I had those. They looked simpler to start with but that was misleading wasn’t it?

    Yes, definitely misleading.

I am hoping a lot of other participants timed out, or decided to return like me, so that the researcher will agree to compensate me for my time.

With only 11 minutes to go, that means I spent over an hour on it. I will be really unfair if I am not compensated at all (just worked out it was an hour and a half! I must be so slow, only getting to example 9).

That’s why hitting submit might have been better than returning it. Because then at least they can see the data that you have done, which gives a stronger case for being paid something.

I’m sorry that you did time out though because they definitely underestimated how long it would take if it was being done properly.

  • Submitted with a 'nocode' you mean? I didn't know you could do that before completion and no technical problems.

I still have the study window open but too late now, as I already returned it and the researcher hasn't replied yet.

Quite often you can’t, but this one did have the submit button sitting in the right-hand corner throughout the study which makes the difference.
