You can imagine my facial expression. Not really sure how they are allowed to advertise the rate of £175 per hour either!@theonlywayisup - Just received a message from the researcher telling me my "submission has been rejected" due to "other" reason....Strikes me that some of these researchers need to go back to school and learn how to conduct their research correctly.2 -
Re:
Confidence in Remembering Pairs of Words
By sms.ed.ac.uk
Has anyone had a problem with this study or managed to complete both parts in just one minute? Before starting the payment was 15 pence and, after starting it said that the payment was £4.50.
I completed both parts of the Study in 22 minutes and received a completion Code. When I tried to enter the Completion Code the box stated: Timed out.
I checked and found:"18 minutes average, 1 minute estimated and maximum time allowed 13 minutes".
It is confusing because I don't think it makes sense if, as stated (I learned too late) - 18 minutes is the average time yet the time allowed was only 13 minutes. All participants who took the average 18 minutes would not have been able to complete the Study without being Timed Out. The 1 minute estimated time would have made sense for 15 pence payment.
I started the Study in good faith expecting (for 15 pence) it would only take a few minutes. It would have been impossible to fully complete this Study in the 1 minute estimate.
After starting, and finding that the payment was to be £4.50 I, wrongly, assumed that my 22 minutes to completion was reasonable. I have contacted The Researcher, hoping that the Timed Out status will be reversed, but I don't feel too optimistic0 -
The same happened to me too Deleted_User the description and the study itself matched but the time allowed was obviously way off. I messaged the researcher but haven't heard anything back yet.

If I hear anything I'll let you know, Cordie. Like you, so far, I have heard nothing from the researcher.
UPDATE x 2:
I have just received notification that the submission has been approved and 15 pence paid.
There was no other response or reason given then, a few minutes later the award was increased by 89 pence.1 -
I wonder if there is an issue today. I have just come home and did a study for musical note pleasantness (who knew that was a thing).
Anyhow I did the study in 17 minutes and hit submit to be told error on submission. It went to my dashboard as timed out. I messaged the researcher to say I had completed it and the bonus was £4.02 (it was displayed as you went along). I checked my balance and it had been paid automatically. I messaged the researcher again to explain I had been awarded the payment but advised of the tech issue. He immediately wrote back to say that the entire study had acted this way and had given a timeout status for over 50% of takers.....connected?
Although the study paid automatically he then also went and unmarked it as timed out and reverted it to approved. That doesn't make any difference to my dashboard but I did appreciate him doing it.

Assessing responses to charity campaign advertisements
By sheffield.ac.uk
£1.00 • £9.86/hr / 10 mins / 79 places
The very last question in this study asked for one's full postcode. Fortunately, it did not validate the length of the reply, so I put in the first part of my postcode only, and messaged the researcher to point out that they are not allowed to ask for this. I also reported it to Prolific, saying that I would have particularly annoyed if, having completed the entire study, I was then rejected on the last question for refusing to enter my full postcode.0 -
A study about categorizing the shape of letters in the world's writing systems
By Olivier Morin£30.00 • £9.00/hr200 mins0 placesThe task consists in classifying the letters of different writing systems according to a rule, using the interface of this website: glyph.shh.mpg.de. You would be studying the shape of letters in a variety of writing systems from across the world, and classifying letters according to their shapes.
This task requires following a precise set of instructions: these instructions have to be read to the end. Participants who do not follow the instructions won't be paid.
Longest one I've ever seen on there, and I got a place on it too (by clicking quickly before taking in the details), but over 3 hours and a late dinner for this payment is not something I'm up for. I realise it is above the Prolific minimum, but for something requiring such a large time commitment I feel that minimum wage at least would be appropriate. Also the description makes it sound as though they're treating the whole thing as an attention check to see if you've read and remembered the instructions correctly, which doesn't give me a good feeling about it. So I've returned it.0
