A Study of the Risks of Sharing and Posting Online Copy

    By strath.ac.uk

    0 places

The aim of this study is to investigate your awareness and understanding of the risks associated with sharing and posting information online. As part of this study, we will ask you to explore the social media posts and web pages associated with a fictitious person to spot which posts might put this person at risk, e.g., having their identity stolen or their account hacked.

It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to explore the posts. If you do not spend a sufficient amount of time exploring the posts or you fail to identify concerning posts you may not be rewarded for this study.

Beforehand, we will ask you a few questions about you, and your online behavior, and following this activity, we will ask you about your experience and feedback on the activity and study.

Not sure what world some of these researchers live in, as it took me a lot longer than 'approximately 15 - 20 mins' to explore the posts, probably double that time, only then to realise that there were a number of other sections to complete as well afterwards.

I could complain I suppose, but it could just be my 'sausage finger syndrome' that means despite using a keyboard in a professional capacity for many years, I am still painfully slow compared to some of the amazing young people I work alongside and the pages seemed to take for ever to load for me as well.

Despite that it was an interesting study, but like it or not, the majority of us have an online profile these days with or without social media and with things like the 'Electoral Register' etc available online it is possible to unearth personal information about an individual relatively easily if you really want to.

I just had this one, and I returned it after about 10 minutes, because I honestly couldn't see what was supposed to be concerning about the posts, and the hints seemed to be suggesting there was something to be worried about if people post the same image more than once, or suggesting I consider things I couldn't possibly know about, like "Where did your friend meet this person?" It seemed to me it was playing into a conspiratorial mindset, that sees connections between people and things as intrinsically suspicious, and also that holding pretty much any views on anything should be rated as "concerning," and I wasn't particularly comfortable with the implications.

I have completed this study and they have refused to pay, I am contesting the rejection.

That's disappointing, have they given you a reason for the rejection?

I would think that you have a good case, because as others have stated it was not entirely clear what was particularly concerning about the posts.

If all else fails maybe ask if you can return it so that it doesn't negatively effect your account status, I have had a good response from researchers with this request in the past, not ideal but sometimes the only option.

Has anyone worked out how to disable the animations on the new site? I find them distracting and they increase the resource usage of my browser. There used to be a link at the bottom of the page, whenever there was an animated image, to disable it - but that is no longer there. Is there any way, or have I just got to put up with them?

Sorry I don't know, olliebean.  I tried to find a way of disabling the sound notification on the app saying: "New Study Available on Prolific."  Most of the time, even when clicking on it straight away the study is already full and I wanted to keep the notifications coming but without the distraction of the sound.

On the much less frequent occasion when I was actively completing a survey, and the notification came up about a new study being available, there was no way of trying to reserve a place when a study was already in progress.  When this happens I find it very distrafting.

I hope you find a way to disable the animations, olliebean.

Can't you just remove the Prolific Assistant extension from your web browser?

Yes, thanks JGB1955, I could do that.  I would like to keep it there incase, when I have time, I still have the opportunity of trying to access a study - just in case there still happens to be a place available when I am able to start.

I am inclined to rush when I hear the notification that a new study is available on Prolific, only to be disappointed, quite often, to find that it is already full.  I hope that makes sense.

    Thank you for replying.

For what it's worth, I've "brute force" disabled the animation by blocking the entire easter-themed graphic with my ad blocker.

Got half way through this and it froze, checked my system and all seemed to be fine my end.

After 5 mins as a last resort I refreshed the page, but as I expected with a Qualtrics 'survey' it went back to the beginning.

I did not have the will to go through it all again so returned and messaged the researcher.
The number returned due to technical issues lately has been a bit disappointing and higher than usual I feel.

A Study about Combat Sports Gear

    By The Market Researcher

    179 places

In this study, we are looking for participants who are either engaged in combat sports or are planning to engage in combat sports. There will be some typing.

    Not having a good day!

First study stuck halfway through and now screened out.

I used to do judo for a couple of years a few years back and made it to top orange belt and recently was planning on taking it up again if I could find a local club.

Now it quite clearly states in the description 'or are planning to engage in combat sports', but I was screened out on the first page because I do not presently take part in a combat sport.

Think I'll take the hint and go for a bike ride, ha, ha.
