HSBC or Lloyds - opinions please

I’m wanting to open an account with either HSBC or Lloyds as they are both in my town.

I really can’t decide between the two as the product offering is very similar.

So if anybody on here has experience with the two, which do you think is the best one to go with for a current account and to build a relationship with?

I currently have a NatWest account but I’ve had problems with their customer service, they’ve closed my local branch, and I feel they’ve never done me any favours.

Who should I open an account with? 15 votes

  • I’m just hoping to see if there’s anybody with experience of both who could suggest one to me over the other and why ... then I’ll open an account.

I have both and I like both. I prefer Lloyds internet banking but prefer HSBC for mortgages and regular saver.

Why do you need good customer service and branch facilities? What are you actually after?

I've not been into a Lloyds branch in 5 years. I've been into HSBC for appointments twice in the last 2 years - one for mortgage and one to open a joint savings account.
  • Everyone's opinion and experience will differ.

Are you looking for something in particular in an account?

As long as you avoid the GoTo bank, you will be fine. You will probably see good old Shakin popping along soon as he luvs GoTo:D !

I've voted for Lloyds simply due to their internet banking - I prefer it.

That may not be relevant for you so it's all about your personal choice on how you want to bank. A branch isn't an issue for me as I never visit one, this may be high up your list of priorities.

It's Barclays, the bank that poster used to work for and tediously feels the need to squeeze inappropriately and tenuously into all sorts of unrelated threads, using the 'goto' reference as if it was well-known....

Lloyds said you are cute but HSBC said you were not their type.

NatWest thought you were just a (card) user and no favours would be forthcoming.

I've been with HSBC for 11 years and I'm quite happy, the internet banking is easy to use and their customer service is good. Twice I've accidentally left my account in negative numbers and I've been charged £20 but they've given me the money back.

My partner has had lloyds for > 20 years and he's happy with them too. Their charges for using the debit/credit cards abroad are high though.
